Mark Smith to Illinois
Edwardsville 2017 point guard Mark Smith had one of the fastest rises in recent memory. He went from committed to Mizzou for baseball and then deciding he wanted to purse hoops in college instead. That was followed by three officials to low-major basketball programs where he almost made a call during the early signing period. Then after a monster senior season Smith was getting offers from high-majors including blue blood programs! All of this happened in less than a year. His recruitment has concluded as the Edwardsville point guard just announced that he has committed to stay home and play for the University of Illinois.
“I want to make my state proud. I want to join the likes of Dee Brown, Brian Cook, Deon Thomas, Frank Williams, and other Mr. Basketball’s that have decided to stay in-state. I also want to thank Malcolm Hill for being a role model for me and Manny Jackson for paving this for many years. I am extremely happy to be going to the University of Illinois.”
This is a huge commitment for new head coach Brad Underwood. From the minute he took over his first mission was to land the commitment of the Edwardsville star and Mr. Basketball winner. On Wednesday night he did exactly that. Smith should be an instant impact Big 10 recruit that will see major minutes from the jump next season for the Illini.
The physical 6’4” point guard is a power guard that knows how to use that strength to get in the lane where he finishes at the hoop through contact. His ball handling has really improved to where he now has the ability to break defenders down and go around them rather than just through them. Compliments his driving game well with a quality jumper from both mid-range and three. Deep range on his pull up jumper to well beyond the college three point line. Outstanding rebounder from the lead guard position. He has always had an advanced feel as a point guard with his vision and basketball IQ. Finds teammates in both transition and the half court.
Smith is the #1 point guard and #3 overall prospect in the final PrepHoopsIllinois 2017 rankings. He played with Ramey-Jets United on the grassroots circuit.
