Circle City Shootout: Sunday Notes
INDIANAPOLIS, IN | The third day at the Circle City Shootout gave us a look at some really good games and some top end teams. We spend the day at Warren Central and North Central to look at some 17U and 16U teams. Here is what we saw on Sunday.
Northside Spartans Backcourt Duo Intriguing
The morning on Sunday is always going to be a slow start after two long days of games previously. However, the Northside Spartans duo of guards were impressive enough to catch my eye. Plainfield’s Trey Davis and Crawfordsville’s Cameron Harris. These two should be able to help them win quite a few games this year.
Trey is a long, lanky guard with a motor and tons of energy. His shot looks solid right now and he was pulling up off the dribble on counters able to hit a few of them. He doesn’t look like he is going to be able to do a lot but he’s such a gamer that he can overwhelm defenders and get them on the back of their heels. Trey finished with 16 points going 4/10 from three.
Harris has grown a bit and is a solid 6’3 scoring guard. Not as aggressive as he can be but more patient and still capable of scoring it a ton. Harris shot the ball pretty well going 4/7 from three and scoring 20 points against Team Focus 2018. Harris could be a really interesting play for some DIII and NAIA schools needing offense.
Jalan Mull Needs To Be Seen
Mull is never going to be a guy that is going to put up a lot of points but man oh man can he pass the ball. He played very well for OPS 2018 against Louisville Prospects and was on it, finding guys left and right. We didn’t track his assists but he had to have a good 10+. He had 3 on back-to-back-to-back possessions at one point.
Mull is a 6’0 point guard that is a bit refreshing as he loves to rack up assists rather than points. Maybe almost against what he should be doing, Jalan could be a little more active looking to score as he gets into the lane so well but will always pass up a decent contested layup for an open one. He’s good enough to see that play develop. If you can pair him up with shooters, he could really make an offense go. Worth a look by all NAIA and DII schools and LM programs should be as well.
IE Diesel 2019 Wins Title
It wasn’t easy but Indiana Elite Diesel 2019 won the Gold Championship for 16U this weekend. They first had to get past a really good OT Elite 2019 program before taking down the darlings of the weekend in Indiana Elite Metro 2019. Metro came in shooting the ball so well. Metro won their previous game against Pocket City 2019 hitting 13 three-pointers. However, Diesel was very aggressive and was able to get enough stops to pull away at the end.
Andrew Owens really looked good in the championship game. He scored 19 points hitting three threes in the first half and scoring 14 points in the first. He’s a big wing with athleticism and a solid motor and he was able to expose a few different matchups. Was really good when he wanted to put the ball on the floor and get to the rim for a finish. After missing most of the High School season with an arm injury, it was great to see him jump right back into productivity.
