Top performances Day 1 of 6A state tournament
WICHITA, Kan. — The opening round of the Kansas 6A state tournament held at Koch Arena in Wichita got underway on Wednesday with the semifinals set to be played on Friday and the championship on Saturday.
Kobe Buffalomeat, 6’7, 2017, Lawrence
Buffalomeat made waves a few weeks ago when he drew national attention for his unique name after signing his LOI to play football at Illinois State. But on Wednesday, he drew attention due to his game as he went for a game-high 23 points in a win over Manhattan. Buffalomeat was 9 for 10 from the field, was 5 for 5 at the free throw line, hauled in nine rebounds and had several critical blocked shots late in the game.
Colby Bullock, 6’0, 2017, Blue Valley North
He’s had put together a terrific postseason run for BVN and on Wednesday, big man Miles Emery got a lot of attention, but Bullock had a terrific all-around floor game, scoring 18 points while shooting 6 for 7 from the free throw line and 2 for 2 at the free throw line.
Garrett Doll, 6’0, 2018, Garden City
Doll got off to a slow start on Wednesday, but got loose in the second half against Blue Valley Northwest and connected on three 3-pointers and led his Garden City team with 14 points and added three rebounds. He finished 5 for 12 from the field and 3 for 7 from 3-point range.
Miles Emery, 6’5, 2018, Blue Valley North
Might have had the best first day of basketball amongst any of the traditional “bigs.” Also a standout on the football field, Emery had 16 first-half points for BVN against Olathe Northwest and finished with 24 points, nine rebounds, three assists and played 29 of the 32 minutes possible.
Trevor Hudgins, 6’0, 2017, Manhattan
One of the state’s top point guards, Hudgins led Manhattan with 19 points added 10 rebounds while shooting 6 for 15 from the field.
Darrien Jackson, 6’3, 2017, Blue Valley Northwest
A recent Tulsa commit, Jackson poured in a game-high 22 points and showed off the athletic ability that has landed him a Division I scholarship, throwing down three dunks in a runaway win over Garden City. He was 8 for 9 from the field and added two rebounds and two assists.
Garrett Luinstra, 6’1, 2018, Free State
He probably hasn’t yet begun to receive the type of attention he deserves, but Luinstra is emerging as one of the top point guards in the 2018 class in Kansas. He is a smooth all-around guard that can really stick outside shots. He finished with 16 points in a 48-42 win over Wichita South and chipped in six rebounds, two assists and went 7 for 7 at the free throw line.
