The top scorer in the state — 6-foot-2 guard Simeon Davis of Hill-Murray, who is averaging 30.9 PPG — has largely flown under the radar. Northstar Hoops was lucky to get in touch with the senior and chat about this season as well as the future for Simeon.
“This season has been an interesting season for our team. Our record, I feel doesn’t reflect who we are as a team,” Simeon said. Hill-Murray is 5–21. “Every day, this team has just gotten better and better. This team has improved immensely. You can tell that this isn’t the same team from December. This year has been a roller coaster of ups and downs, but overall, the best thing about this season is that we have really come together and become a team.”
It’s a new era for Hill-Murray as Trevor Davis, a former D1 juco assistant in Louisiana and Texas, came home for his first year as the Pioneers’ coach.
“Things with Coach Davis are great,” Simeon said. “He came in and set the tone from day one. He changed the whole mindset of the program. He has been one of my favorite coaches I’ve ever had by far. When I first met him, he sat me down and told me that he and I had to have a strong connection for this team to successful this year. So from then on, he and I have had that strong connection.
“We always talk after games about what could have been improved, what I need to do better to be a better leader, having a positive outlook on things, etc. He has preached positivity to our guys and it’s really helped. I believe he’s exactly what this program needed to turn things around.”
Simeon is looking to pull off an upset in sections and go out “with a bang.” After his high school season ends, he plans on playing a post-grad spring with Grassroots AAU.
“I’ve just been talking to a few division three colleges,” Simeon said. “St. John’s, St. Thomas, UW-River Falls, Bethel, etc. Some others have shown interest, and I have even talked to some D1 jucos. I visited St. Thomas earlier in the year. I plan to play this spring as an unsigned senior to see what happens.”
