Recruiting Report: Sam Shafer (2018)
Lincoln Way East 2018 small forward Sam Shafer has great size for position at 6’5”. He has quality athleticism to along with that. What he does best is shoot the rock from the perimeter. He does that at a high rate. Smooth looking stroke with great mechanics and a quick release. Gets height off the floor. Nothing but net almost every time! Mixes in a drive on occasion as he is a decent athlete. Passes it well for an off guard. Solid rebounder for a small forward. Should be on the low-major radar heading into the spring.
We spoke with him about his high school season.
“I am averaging 15 points per game. I feel like I did pretty good all-around especially on the offensive end. I worked hard in the off season to work on mid-range and driving. I feel like I incorporated those skills well this season which helped me be a bigger threat. I have about 53 three pointers. Also worked on my vertical which helped me get a lot of blocks and a few dunks.”
Shafer spoke about his strengths as a player.
“I’m a very good shooter which helps space the floor for teammates and can get to the basket or pull up if guarded heavily. Can post up smaller guards very well if they try to put a quick guard on me. I’m 6’5” which helps me contest shots on defense. Play both on big guys and guards on defense.”
He will once again be running with the Illinois Wolves on the grassroots circuit.
“I’ve been talking to many colleges recently so I am looking forward to playing in front of them and showing them what I can do. Looking forward to competing at a high level and making my teammates better.”
