Recruiting Report: Gilwan Nelson (JUCO)
Olney Central College sophomore small forward Gilwan Nelson is a versatile wing at 6’5” that has length and defends multiple positions. He has really rounded out his game in the past two years at OCC. Was a raw prospect at Mt. Vernon High School, but has improved his game over the two seasons of JUCO ball. Nelson uses his versatility finishing the high/low game and working as an inside/outside threat. Can hit an occasional three off the catch. D2 prospect.
Nelson spoke about his sophomore season at OCC.
“I would have expected it to go better. We found ourselves toward the end of the season. We knew we should have been better than our record.”
How does he feel it has gone for him individually?
“I think I had my ups and downs. I played pretty good for the most part. Just trying to bring different pieces to the table from last year. Last year I brought the defense and rebounding. As a sophomore I tried bring more of my offensive game.”
Nelson told us that there was one area he really focused on in the off season preparing for his sophomore year.
“I feel I improved on my shooting. Last year I knew I had to work on that. My number one focus was improving my shooting. I stayed on the gun all the time. Try to get better with my on ball defense even more.”
When his game is rolling what are his strengths?
“Slashing, defending, and just letting the game come to me. Whenever it comes to me I feel I can do anything. More defense and grabbing rebounds.”
He updated us on his recruitment.
“I have a few looks. No offers yet. I am talking to Southern Indiana, Lindenwood, Belmont Abbey, and a few others.”
