Recruiting Report: Beijan Newbern (2018)
Robbinsdale Cooper is a team with pride. Their junior leader Beijan Newbern is also a prideful player. The last two years they’ve pulled March upsets.
Last year it was Cooper defeating Wayzata in section play. This year the upset came against Cooper’s rival, which was even sweeter.
“Our top moment was definitely going into Armstrong where we weren’t respected or expected to win and winning the battle of the 281 school district,” Beijan told NHR.
Cooper then fell in round two of the playoffs finishing the year 13-13 but that win over Armstrong made up for a lot of the losses.
Beijan scored 20 points a game this season with his attacking/slashing style. Few could keep in front of his agile attacks game by game.
“My game has grown a lot from going from putting up inconsistent numbers to having to put up numbers night in and night out really helped me improve my game,” Newbern told NHR.
“I got put in positions that as junior I’d rather handle now that way when next year me and my guys are ready and more experienced.”
Cooper was a young team. Outside of second leading scorer Damien Gordon most of their team is back. Guys like Nathan Hill, Jalen Justice, Jalen Miller, and Trokon Massey all return.
“To improve for next year I must not relax and be settled,” Beijan explained. “I must continue to work hard and put in the work this off season.
“Becoming a knockdown shooter is something that must come with me not being the most athletic or even the biggest player.”’
Newbern has the potential to certainly play college basketball. Some schools are calling but Beijan is more concerned about becoming a better player.
“A lot of NSIC schools and a couple division one schools are interested. I’m mostly just quiet on that part until schools start offering and stuff.”
