Prospect Spotlight: D’Monte’ Gaw (2019)
KANSAS CITY, Kan. — After helping lead Kansas City Schlagle to an historic season, 2019 guard D’Monte’ Gaw is gearing up for a big season on the grassroots circuit this spring and summer.
A tough, athletic, slashing combo guard, Gaw can play the 2 or 3 and is a good rebounder, ball handler and is at his best driving to the bucket and finishing through contact.
One of several talented Stallion players, Gaw helped Schlagle to a 16-7 record and a big finish to its season as Schlagle advanced all the way to the 5A state championship game where they fell to Shawnee Heights in the finals.
“This year was a great learning experience, we put in so much hard work during the season and did some amazing things that many thought we couldn’t do,” Gaw said. “We beat adversity in many situations, played together and fought to the final horn. We also learned each other as we competed this season. This was the ‘pay off’ year, everything we were suppose to accomplish in the pass helped shape us into the team we finished with.
“It was a wonderful experience making it to state and competing against the top teams in the state,” Gaw said. “It was the first time for all of us and we just gave it everything we got because we knew how hard we worked to get here.
“It was really unbelievable during the moment because no one would think we would have went. However my whole team and the coaching staff believed and knew we had what it took to compete for a state championship and from the start of the season that was the goal.”
Gaw has since committed to play with Team Rush on the Adidas Gauntlet Series and says he will be spending the offseason focused on improving his handles, moving and scoring without the ball, defense and his jump shot.
Although he currently does not hold any offers, Gaw has drawn interest from several schools, including Louisianna Tech, East Tennessee State University and UMKC.
