Potential Spring Stock Risers: 2018 Posts
In our series “Potential Stock Risers” we look at a group of prospects at each position in various classes and give insight to some of the players that could breakout this spring and see their recruitment take a major step forward. Here is our Potential Spring Stock Risers: 2018 Posts.
PF Messiah Jones (Simeon)
Overall Rank: #8
Position Rank: #1
Jones is already the top 2018 power forward in the state of Illinois, but that hasn’t really translated into recruiting success to date. The major drawback is he is undersized at only about 6’5” to 6’6”. Jones plays much bigger than that with his length and freakish athleticism. We expect Jones to have a big spring using his energy and motor to grab rebounds and block shots inside. Should be a kid that emerges as a mid-major target and low-major priority.
C Jalen Shaw (Larkin)
Overall Rank: #13
Position Rank: #1
Shaw could be the biggest potential stock riser of everyone on this list! The 6’9” center has quietly put together a monster season for Larkin. He became the #1 center in the state with improved fluidity in his post moves and his ability to protect the rim. Shaw could be a player that jumps into the top 10 overall in the state and mid-majors fall in love with after watching him in April.
PF Zion Griffin (Hinsdale South)
Overall Rank: #24
Position Rank: #6
Griffin emerged on the radar this season as a lefty power forward with solid strength for Hinsdale South. He loves to work from the mid-post area and in. Attacks with a couple dribbles going downhill as a face up four man. This is a potential low-major prospect that not a lot of colleges have on their radar yet.
PF Barlow Alleruzzo (Sandburg)
Overall Rank: #31
Position Rank: #8
Alleruzzo has quality size and can really shoot the basketball. Much like Griffin above this Sandburg product was an unknown coming into the season. He has raised his stock with projectable upside and his ability to stretch the floor with his shot. Low-majors should monitor him.
C Ben Wolf (Naperville Central)
Overall Rank: #33
Position Rank: #2
Like the potential a lot here with Wolf. He will be moving up the board even more in our next rankings update, but as the #2 center in the state he presents legit size and great strength. Plays with his back to basket making quick post moves and scoring on the block. Potential as a rim protector as well. Tough low post defender. Low-major and mid-majors need to make sure they get out to see him with Mercury Elite.
PF Skyler Kooyenga (Warren)
Overall Rank: #46
Position Rank: #10
Kooyenga is a 6’9” power forward that lit it up when we saw him back in the fall at our camp as well as NY2LA. He is a big with legit size and skill. Spaces the floor with his shooting out to beyond the arc and runs the floor well. For whatever reason every time we watched Warren this year his coach never played him. D2 programs need to monitor him and try to get in there early as a potential steal!
PF Tyronn Mosley (Orr)
Overall Rank: #70
Position Rank: #14
Mosley is a combo forward that can play both some three and four at 6’6”. Improved his ball handling a lot as a junior. With a thin and wiry build he will definitely need to add strength at the next level, but he is a plus athlete with intriguing tools being able to play and guard multiple positions. Mosley could emerge as a low-major candidate.
