What we learned at 5A … Kansas Roundtable
Salina Central 53, Schlagle 55
This was the first time we’ve gotten to see Schlagle play this year, and they really are a fun team to watch. The game in general was a crazy one to be at. They are active on both ends of the floor which is rare with a high school team and have lots of exciting players as well. It seemed like the Stallions never got tired all game long. 2018 guard Tyon Grant-Foster really impressed me as he finished the contest with 16 points. He is quick and has a great first step to the basket. They were also able to get contributions from a couple 2019 guys in Ronnell Mitchell who chipped in 10 and D’Monte Gaw who had 11 points. They will be a tough out for anyone given their athleticism and speed.

James Richardson is a 2019 guard to keep an eye on in the future. The 6’0 guard came in off the bench to light up the scoreboard, connecting on three 3-pointers in the first quarter, then adding 3s in the second and fourth quarter to finish with 19. Brandon Neuschafer, a 5’9 senior guard, was quiet throughout much of the contest but came alive when it mattered most, scoring 10 of his 13 in the fourth quarter.

Wichita Heights 72, Pittsburg 65
This Heights team will run, run and run some more. The second they get the ball they are off and running and love to go coast-to-coast. 2017 guard Tyrell Andrews is a quick guard who has the ability to finish around the basket and has a very nice eurostep that he loves to go to. Andrews finished with a game-high 25 points in a victory over Pittsburg. The Falcons also have some nice players in 2018 guard Devin Davis and 2019 guard Kvonte Baker who had some flashy passes and is an elite perimeter defender proved why he will be valuable to someones AAU program in the summer. 2017 guard Anthony Collins had a big time performance adding 16 points. Sometimes they are a little out of control with the basketball, but for the most part this team will run you to death.

Pittsburg has some talented individual players, including 6’4 2018 forward Chase Curtis and 6’5 2018 forward DeShaun English, the later of which struggled at the offensive end but hauled in 12 rebounds to lead the Purple Dragons. 6’0 2019 guard Jerek Belcher had a big game shooting the ball, going for six 3-pointers, including some clutch shots late in the game. Gavyn Elkamil, a 6’2 2020 guard, is among the state’s top freshmen. They end the 2016-17 season 20-3, but bring back some of their most important pieces for next year.

GODDARD EISENHOWER 55, BISHOP CARROLL 50
It took a while for Eisenhower standouts Matt Pile and Dylan Vincent to get warmed up against Bishop Carroll in the opening round of the 5A state championships, but they both got it going in the second quarter and helped carry the Tigers to a win. Pile is a big, physical player with terrific hands and ability to pursue the ball off the glass. He finished with 16 rebounds to lead both teams, matching his season average of 14.5. Vincent is 6’2 2018 guard terrific attacking the paint off the bounce and has a variety of moves to free himself up for easy baskets once he gets near the rim. He finished with 25 points, matching his season average.

Bishop Carroll gave the top-seeded Tigers all they could handle. 2019 post Clay Cundiff showed off his skill set as he went for 14 points. Cundiff has the ability to scores with his back to the basket and even showed off a little bit of a range by knocking down two 3-pointers. Look for his name to be well-known in the coming years.
