Game 1 at the 810varsity Best of the Midwest Showcase, the Free State (Kan.) Firebirds improved to 11-4 this season with a 68-57 win over Raytown (Mo.), a team that entered Saturday’s game 14-3.
Free State got 16 points each from 2018 Garrett Luinstra and 2017 Cameron Clark and 10 from 2017 Jay Dineen, while Raytown got 14 points from 2017 guard Marcus McGee and 12 points from 2018 forward Devin Drew.
MVP: Garrett Luinstra (Free State). Kid filled up a stat sheet. A 6’1 2018 guard, Luinstra led the team with 16 points, hauled in six rebounds, handed out three assists, made three steals and connected on three 3-pointers.
Offensive Player of the Game: Garrett Luinstra (Free State). Luinstra is a well-rounded guard that can do a little bit of everything pretty well. He handles the ball well, can shoot from the outside and gets to the rim. He made three 3-pointers in this one and showed off his ability to score the ball.
Defensive Player of the Game: Isaiah Burton (Raytown). A 6’3 2017 wing, Burton is a long, active player that is capable of guard several different positions. He probably didn’t have his best performance in this one at the offensive end, but did put together a strong game defensively.
Best shooter: Marcus McGee (Raytown). A 6’0 2017 guard, McGee knocked down a game-high four 3-pointers, including two in the fourth quarter and finished with 14 points to lead the Bluejays.
Best rebounder: Cameron Clark (Free State). Clark is a strong, physical 6’7 2017 forward that is a big presence in the paint at both ends of the court. He finished with seven rebounds in this one, six at the defensive end of the court.
Best passer: Bryan Blanks (Raytown). A 6’0 2017 guard, Blanks was dropping dimes in this one, getting into the paint and making dump down passes to big men Mason Fair and Devin Drew for easy buckets. He finished with five assists, but would have had more were it not for Raytown bigs getting fouled and going to the line.
Best off the Bench: Sloan Thomsen (Free State). A 6’6 2017 forward, Thomsen can shoot from the outside and score inside as well. He made a long 3 in the first quarter and finished with five points and two rebounds off the bench.
Under the Radar Players: Mason Fair (Raytown). He is a big, strong, physical post player that plays much bigger than his listed height. Fair has good hands, good foot work in the paint and gets on the boards well. He had 10 points and five rebounds in this one.
Cameron Clark (Free State). He’s listed at 6’7 and has a big frame and has a diverse skill set. He’s strong and physical in the paint, but can also handle the ball a little and face up and attack the basket as well as play in the paint.
