An unselfish point guard, Brown says he thinks of the team before himself and his play has helped set the tone for a talented, yet selfless Heights’ squad this season. Already the Thunderbirds are 15-2 this season and are coming off a big 83-71 win over Topeka Hayden on Tuesday.
“Our team this year is really unselfish and bought in to what coach (Steve) Wallace wants us to do and whatever it takes to win games,” Brown said. “Individually I got off to a slow start but have picked it up lately and have become a more mature leader for our team.”
Brown said the first time the Thunderbirds squared off against Hayden on Jan. 25 he broke out of a slump, scoring a career-high 34 points in a 98-82 win.
“I was in a slump and needed to get out of it, (scoring a career high 34 points) gave me the confidence boost I needed,” he said.
Brown says he has had a lot of influences in his career. He grew up playing for Jordan Canfield, the father of Jett Canfield and this past summer he played for Will Spradling’s SSA Hoops Elite 17 and says he focused on improving his overall game while playing against top notch competition.
“He pushed me to be a better player and taught me a lot of great things,” Brown said. “Into my high school career first was Coach Sam Stroh who really convinced me to play basketball and also Will Spradling and Coach Wallace who have really taught me a lot about being a true point guard and becoming a better leader and what needed to be done to get recruited.
“Last my parents who have been my biggest inspirations and my biggest supporters since day 1.”
A fan of the Kansas Jayhawks, Brown says he enjoys watching Frank Mason and Matt Ferrell of Notre Dame.
“They’re smaller point guards like me and really push their teammates to be better and do everything it takes to win which is something that I try and do for my team,” he said.
Brown said he chose Missouri Western after building a strong relationship with the Griffons’ coaching staff. Although he did not have any other offers when he made his commitment, he had drawn interest from several colleges, including Northwest Missouri State, Missouri Southern, Lindenwood, Northern Arizona, Rockhurst and Emporia State.
“Ever since this summer (Missouri Western) went to multiple games of mine and texted me or called me every week and really showed a lot of love to me and when I went down there the team was really cool and it felt like I already belonged their and as soon as they offered I jumped right on it and committed,” Brown said.
