Continue ReadingTrent West had to wait his turn a little bit for the Lakers. He’s making up for that time with a big senior season.
West is averaging 13 points and about eight rebounds per game for a Prior Lake team that has surprised some people with its success this year.
“It’s going good,” said West of the season. “We started off as strong as I can remember. We’re going through some growing pains right now but we should be peaking come section time.”
The Lakers are in the mix for a top-four seed in the seemingly open Section 2AAAA and West has been a big reason for that success.
The Lakers have hit a bit of a rough patch in recent games, a result undoubtedly tied to the strength of the South Suburban Conference where state powerhouses Apple Valley and Lakeville North reside along with Rosemount and Lakeville South.
“Anybody can beat anybody in our conference,” said West. “It makes it tough sometimes but it also makes it a lot of fun.”
At 6-foot-7, West is a tough cover for a lot of teams because of his ability to handle and shoot the ball from the perimeter. His length makes it difficult for opposing teams to check him with a guard but his ball skills give him an advantage over a lot of bigs.
“I’m filling a different role than I did last year and making a bigger impact,” said West. “The first few games I found my place and it’s been good since. I like shooting from out the outside using my length over smaller guys. I can go inside as well if they put a shorter guy on me but I can stretch the floor well.”
West has drawn interest from several colleges and said he feels like he’s pretty close to making a decision. Hamline, University of Wisconsin – Eau Claire and a recent offer from Jamestown are the three he’s most focused on right now.
“It’s tough to decide but I’m hoping to make my decision here in the next few weeks. “It’s the biggest decision I’ve ever made so I want to make the right choice.”
