Before Dangerfield chose to attend Harford Tech in Bel Air, MD, basketball games were merely viewed as just another after school activity. Fast forward to his senior season and the Cobras are 14-3 with one of the most potent offenses in the county.
Dangerfield has been the catalyst for the Cobras’ success by averaging 24 points, five assists, and four steals per game. He has had multiple 30-point games including a career-high 39-point performance coming against Aberdeen High School. With at least seven games remaining on the Cobras’ schedule, Dangerfield is closing in on the all-time Harford County Public School scoring record (1,712 points). He currently has 1,633 points.
“Darius is the best scorer I’ve ever seen,” Head coach Bill Jones told PrepHoops. “His midrange jumpshot is pretty automatic, but he’s also capable of getting 10 assists a game for us. He’s a winner and his production should carry over to whatever school he decides to attend.”
His ability to blow past defenders and finish amongst contact makes up for what he can’t in the height department. Because of his quickness off the dribble, Dangerfield can also create space and knock down shots with consistency beyond the arc. What seems most impressive though, is his IQ as when it comes to picking and choosing his spots to score and when to make the right play for his teammate.
Dangerfield told PrepHoops he currently holds an offer from Millersville University and has garnered interest from Lycoming College, Eastern University, Cabrini University, and Marymount University.
“The things I will bring to a college program is energy, leadership, and hard work,” Dangerfield said. “I’m a winner, I love to win and play hard until the buzzer. As a point guard, I will bring scoring when it is needed, but also great on ball defense and creating shots for others.”
(Note: Highlights are from Dangerfield’s junior season)
Dangerfield has grown significantly on the court since walking the hallways as a freshman, but Coach Jones has been most impressed with his maturity off the court with the younger guys. Jones told PrepHoops that Dangerfield not only works with the underclassmen on the varsity team, but also takes the time out to assist the junior varsity players as he tries to promote the winning culture that he helped create.
In his three and a half seasons at Harford Tech, Dangerfield has led the Cobras to 51 total wins and two district championships. This season, the last stop he wants to make before finishing his high school career is the Comcast Center to play for a state championship.
