The recruiting landscape is constantly changing throughout the year, but it heats up as the spring signing period approaches for the better prospects. Schools have been slow to come to know Burke Putnam at East Central, but it is time to wake up.
Putnam is dominating at East Central leading the Cardinals to a top five ranking in Class 5A. Over the season Putnam is averaging an outstanding 24 points per game, which is even more impressive considering the double teams that constantly come his way.
"The latest on my recruitment would be the offer from Connor State," said Putnam. "Still in contact with the other schools. The main Division I talking to me at this moment is North Dakota State."
The fact more Division I schools have not given the 6'2 Combo Guard a look is head scratching. Watch Putnam play and it won't take long to see he can play at the Low Major Division I level. He is not a flashy guard with the ball in his hands, simply he gets the job done. He is best at the Point Guard spot with the ball in his hands running the show. Putnam is a great passer because of his vision and high basketball IQ.
Putnam has improved his jumper from the outside, which makes him lethal considering he has always been excellent at driving to the hoop and finishing. Putnam can score in all three phases of the game, plays hard at all times and can play some defense as well.
Putnam is still weighing his options as far as what college he will attend. He has a good idea of what he is looking for in a college.
"I'm looking for a school with a good program of the major I want to study, which is business," said Putnam. "A family type of atmosphere with other players and coaching staff."
Putnam has not made the decision on weather he will sign with a Division II program or go the JUCO route if a Division I offer does not come his way. Although, Putnam is hoping he will get a chance from a Division I program he is not afraid of going the Division II or JUCO route.
If a Division I program is looking for a Point Guard that can not turn the ball over, score when needed, be a reliable ball handler, a good leader on and off the floor, and a great student in the classroom (24 on ACT) Putnam is one to give a look.
Putnam holds offers from UFAS, Oklahoma Christian, Connors State, New Mexico Military and NOC- Tonkawa.
