It is time for our detailed scouting report on the event. Here is part two of our 2018 scouting report!
PG Courtney Ramey (Webster Groves, MO – 2018 – Louisville)
Ramey was playing his first game as a Louisville commit after making his college decision on Friday. He is one of the truly elite point guards in the country. It was a great matchup between him and Ayo Dosunmu who is also a five-star floor general. They guarded each other in spurts in the high level game. Ramey displayed his complete game! He scored in multiple ways. Hit a three early, but it didn’t really fall from beyond the arc the rest of the game. Ramey controlled the pace of the game. Great speed off the bounce in both the half court and transition. Blow by ability where he can get in the lane. Had several acrobatic finishes at the rim. Also got to the foul line at an extremely high rate where he was 13-14 from the line. Also was very impressed with his rebounding from the point guard position. Dished it well and put his teammates in positions to succeed. Ramey had 26 points, 9 rebounds, and 3 assists. Great early get for Louisville!
PF Carte’Are Gordon (Webster Groves, MO – 2018 – SLU)
Gordon is still getting back into the swing of things with his new squad after setting out the first half of the high school season because of his transfer. Gordon is a 6’9” 255 pound beast on the interior. What makes him special is for his size he has tremendous mobility. Gordon scored on multiple right handed hook shots. Was physical down low and attacked the glass. Even hit a 15 foot jumper. Defensive presence in the lane with athleticism and pure size. Gordon had 16 points, 9 rebounds, and 4 blocks. Top 25 prospect nationally.
PG Ayo Dosunmu (Morgan Park – 2018)
Dosunmu as usual was the go to player for the Mustangs. He was best in this particular contest using his explosive speed to get in the lane where he was fouled consistently including a strong and-1 on big boy Carte’Are Gordon. Dosunmu is a plus foul shooter that was 7-11 from the line. Slick ball handler in traffic pushing it in transition. Was 2-5 from three in this game. Really liked his passing. Worked well in the pick and pop finding his shooters. Got his teammates involved in positions to score. Dosunmu had 21 points and 5 dimes. He is the top 2018 prospect in Illinois and a high-major player.
SG Malachi Smith (Belleville East – 2018)
Smith is a 6’3” shooting guard that has steadily raised his stock over the last year to where he is now a top 20 player in the 2018 class. Smith didn’t have his best game at the O’Fallon Shootout, but was still solid. The jump shot just wasn’t falling. He couldn’t connect on any of his clean looks from three. Scored on a couple drives. The area he quietly showed progress was his passing. Moved the ball to his teammates when he knew his shot wasn’t falling and got it to the hot hands. Smith finished with 7 points and 7 assists. D1 prospect.
PG Kaleb Thornton (Bolingbrook – 2018)
Thornton is a 6’1” point guard that showed an outstanding feel for the game. He is one of the top floor generals in the class and proved that at the O’Fallon Shootout. His speed off the bounce and ability to get in the paint make him a dynamic weapon. This junior is a slick ball handler that is slippery through traffic. Will need to add strength at the next level, but he isn’t afraid to attack the cup. Outstanding in the open floor pushing it and has the defense on their heels. Thornton proved in this game he is one of the best passers in his class. On a day where we saw two of the best point guards in the country in 2018 Thornton was probably the best passer all day. He got others involved in both the half court and transition. Good free throw shooter. The jump shot is the next evolution in his game. He did make the only one he took in this contest from the corner. He had 18 points and 9 assists. Mid-major and low-majors should be looking at him!
SG Cam Burrell (Morgan Park – 2018)
Burrell is an athletic 6’6” wing that is mostly a utility guy at this stage. Long and rangy build. He is super bouncy which allows him to be a good rebounder for a wing. He got on the glass for four offensive boards against Webster Groves. Hit a mid-range jumper. Much like his brother he doesn’t have a defined skill set at this point, but is a raw athlete with upside. Continues to show flashes as a defender on the perimeter. He finished with 5 points, 10 rebounds, and 2 blocks.
PG Jalen Hodge (O’Fallon – 2018)
Hodge is a lefty point guard that impressed us over the summer with the Southwest Jets. He is quick and shifty with the ball in his hands. The junior is at his best in the transition game where he pushes it and weaves in and out of the defense. At times he can play a bit too fast which leads to mistakes. Hodge is a streaky shooter from three. Much better pulling up from mid-range and scores getting to the hoop with slick drives. Sound passer especially in the open floor. He had 10 points and 4 dimes. Potential D2 prospect.
C Colin Braun (Vianney, MO – 2018)
Braun was outstanding for Vianney! The 6’7” post is really thin with a long and lanky build. Was impressed with how well he rebounded. Great feel for rebounding in his area. Consistently cleared the glass on the defensive end high pointing balls. Offensively was very efficient with his touches. Soft touch around the hoop and finished with sound body positioning despite his lack of strength. Braun is also a plus passer for a big man that works well in the high/low. Inconsistent free throw shooter as he shoots them with only one hand. He had 13 points and 11 rebounds. Small college prospect to track.
