MVP
SG Darius Beane (Carbondale)
Beane is a 6’4” shooting guard with a silky smooth game. Long and rangy build. Will need to add more strength as times goes on, but he has the frame to do it. Plus athlete that is fluid with all his movements. In the first half he mostly settled for jumpers. Beane has a sound perimeter shot especially off the bounce from mid-range, but he can fall in love with it at times. Did have a couple nice 15 footers where he shook his man with a cross and pulled up. In the second half he was more aggressive attacking off the bounce. Quick first step in one on one situations and comes strong off a ball screen. Slippery through traffic. He had several and-1’s in this contest. Also displayed solid passing throughout the game especially on drive and kicks. Defensively he has active hands, moves well laterally, and can block an occasional shot. He had 20 points in the win. Low-major plus to mid-major prospect. Beane is having a very good junior year.
Play of the game
Kani Acree had a monster block on the defensive end swatting it to Beane who took it the other way for a transition score.
Best defensive performance
SF Kani Acree (Carbondale)
Acree stands at 6’4” with a long wingspan. Length plays very well on the defensive end of the floor. Extremely active getting in passing lanes and creating deflections. Had a couple steals he turned into points. Offensively Acree mixed in an array of scores. Runner in lane, pull up 15 footer, corner three off the catch, and a couple takes off the bounce. Jumper which was his weakness before has definitely improved. Still best when he is aggressive going downhill. Acree had 23 points. Low-major prospect.
Best catch and shoot guy
SF Dawson Berry (Centralia)
Continue to not understand why more schools are not recruiting this 6’4” small forward. Berry is a plus shooter off the catch that moves great without the ball. Quick release with pure stroke. Plays really hard. Crafty defender that made some plays in the second half on that end. D3/NAIA prospect had 20 points.
Best intangibles
SF Winslow Martin (Carbondale)
Martin is a 6’5” utility player for Carbondale. He does a little bit of everything to complement their two star players. Had a nice drive and kick dime. Hit a runner in lane and finished inside. 6 points on the night. Small college prospect.
