Like the rest of the tournament, there was not any surprises in the final four as the top two seeds were able to do enough to move on to the championship. Tonight’s game will feature the two teams that many felt were the best in this classification. It should be a fun game with a lot of talent on display. Last night’s 5A State Championship which featured a double OT win from Sunnyslope will be hard to match. However, these top tier teams will draw quite a crowd and leave us on the edge of our seats.
6A State Championship – #2 Basha vs. #1 Corona Del Sol
Basha
Basha is a solid basketball team. Although the word “solid” is thrown around too loosely in the basketball community, there truly isn’t a better word for this group. They have a number of players who can come into the game at any point in time and make an impact. Obviously, they will rely on the efforts of Terrell Brown and Gabe Mcglothan to bring home the trophy. With that said, their x-factor and what makes them so tough is that the rest of the group is talented and bought into the program. They play solid defense and are capable of doing an array on that end of the floor that make them difficult. For instance, to change the tempo of the game against Desert Vista they switched to a special version of a 3-2 zone. Desert Vista continued to swing the basketball side to side but struggled with diagnosing the best gaps to attack. Brown, Mcglothan, and the rest of the group will poise a difficult match-up tonight for Corona Del Sol.
Corona Del Sol
Del Sol is led by two high caliber players in Arizona commit Alex Barcello and Vanderbilt commit Saban Lee. In addition to these talent prospects, they bring high caliber freshman Dalen Terry off of the bench. Del Sol has been in this position before as they will try to win their third state championship in four years. Barcello and Lee are game changers due to their ability shoot the basketball as well as take people off of the dribble. When teams make mistakes, these two are very quick to make them pay on the other end of the floor. They are hard to guard in transition due to their shooting abilities as well as their crafty footwork. If Basha makes any mistakes, look for these two to push the basketball and create fouls and transition buckets.
Prediction:
In order for Basha to win, they will have to play mistake free basketball as Corona capitalizes very well. Fortunately for Basha, that has been their forte all season. I am taking Basha in the first upset of the 6A state tournament.
