MVP: Effix Miller-Swansea (2018)
Miller ranked #56 in the Prep Hoops SC top 80 class of 2018, scored 11 points and grabbed five rebounds in the 43-29 win over Pelion at Brookland-Cayce High School in Cayce. The win improves the Tigers to 12-13 and dropped the Panthers to 14-12.
Play of the Game: Effix Miller-Swansea (2018) basket in the second quarter
Miller gave Swansea a 14-12 lead that the Tigers would not give up with 4:04 left in the half. The basket was part of a 17-7 run in the second quarter.
Best Offensive Performance: Malcolm Davis-Pelion (2019)
Davis scored a game-high 15 points and tried to keep the Panthers close.
Best Offensive Performance: Greg Williams-Swansea (2019)
Williams created havoc inside on the Pelion offense. Williams would make the Panthers pay by making them change their shot and stay outside of the paint.
Intangibles: Pelion and Swansea making Playoffs
Both teams play two games in less than 24 hours. The Tigers beat Gilbert 50-33 and Panthers beat Edisto 52-48 to advance to the third and fourth place tiebreaking game.
Best Guy off the Bench: Hezekiah Washington –Swansea (2018)
Washington came off the bench to turn up the pressure on the defender. Washington had three steals that led to six fast-break points for the Tigers.
Best Underclassman: Effix Miller-Swansea (2018)
Miller is 6’0 point-guard for the Tigers. Miller is the leader on and off the floor for Swansea. Miller was the leading scorer; also he would pass the ball to the open man. Miller would also step out for open mid-range shot.
Best Guy under the radar: Malcolm Davis-Pelion (2019)
Davis is a 5’7 point guard for the Panthers. Davis runs the offense and would pester the defender up the floor. Davis even went up and blocked a shot from behind, as the defender had a breakaway layup.
Best Project: Nico Austin-Pelion (2020)
Austin is a 6’2 power forward that starts for the Panthers. Austin will be call on in the future to help the Panthers keep climbing in the region 5-3A standing.
Takeaway:
Swansea won their second game in less than 24 hours to finish third in Region 5-3A. The Tigers is led by former Lake City and Lower-Richland coach Willie Thomas. Swansea will go on the road to play at Wade Hampton (Varnville) and Pelion will travel to Ridgeland-Hardeeville in the Class 3A SCHSL lower state playoffs. Pelion is led by first year coach David Smith. This is the first time since 1993 for making the playoffs.
