Final OT: Stevenson 60 – Morgan Park 58
In the first game of the 22nd McDonald’s City-Suburban Showdown, Stevenson squared off against Morgan Park. Morgan Park was without starting forward Melo Burrell who was resting for the City championship vs Simeon. Stevenson led most of game until late when Morgan Park would force the game to overtime, where Stevenson would pull off the victory in overtime.
MVP: Justin Smith (SF, 6-7, Sr., Stevenson) – Indiana commit
The senior Indiana commit Justin Smith finished with a double-double 15 points and 11 rebounds and had 4 steals and 2 block shots to lead Stevenson in the win. Smith was effective attacking the basket and drawing contact where he was about to line 13 times making 7. Smith had a good game on the defensive end as well getting into the passing lanes. Smith uses he leaping ability to block shot or alter shots on opponents.
Offensive performance: Willie Herenton (G, 6-2, Sr., Stevenson)
Herenton provided scoring punch for Stevenson finishing with 18 points. He was able to dribble drive and get to the rim for some nice finishes. Herenton handles the ball well and broke he defender down several times to get to the rack. The combination of Herenton and Smith gave Stevenson a nice 1-2 scoring duo in the game.
Defensive Performance: Lenell Henry (F, 6-9 Sr., Morgan Park)
Lenell Henry had himself a good game on both ends. On defense, he grabbed a game high 13 rebounds, and used his length and athleticism to minimize Stevenson’s points in the paint. He finished with 11 points and 2 block shots as well. Including some nice post moves down in the paint.
Best Rebounder: Aiden O’Connell (F 6-3 Sr., Stevenson)
At only 6-3 the senior forward totaled 12 rebound 6 offensive and 6 defensive and won most of the 50/50 loose balls his way. Somewhat of a johnny on the spot because he was always in good position to grab a board and had a couple offensive boards that led to second chance points for Stevenson
Best Underclassmen: Shon Robinson (F, 6-8 Fr., Morgan Park)
Making his varsity debut Shon Robinson came off the bench and drilled a couple of three’s showing nice touch for the stretch forward. He was active on D with a couple rebounds and a block in 6 minutes of action. Will certainly be a prospect to track as he is only a freshman
Best Under the radar performance: Aidan O’Connell (F, 6-3, Sr., Stevenson)
O’connell provide major support for Justin Smith and Willie Herenton. He ended up with 11 points 12 rebs and 4 ast. What was most impressive was that against Morgan Park’s defense he had zero turnovers.
Best 6th Man of the game: Keyon Duling (G, 6-1, Jr., Morgan Park)
Duling came up clutch off the bench hitting some key free throws and buckets for Morgan Park he finished with 8 points 3 reb and 2 ast.
Play of the Game: Nimari Burnett (G, 6-2, Fr., Morgan Park)
With just 4.6 seconds left in regulation and Morgan Park down 3 the Freshman Nimari Burnett would drill a three from NBA range at the buzzer to send the game to Overtime.
Best Passer: Ayo Dosunmu (G, 6-4 Jr., Morgan Park)
Dosunmu has good vision and is super tough out on the break. He finished with a team high 13 points also had 3 ast 2 blks and 2 steals. Solid well rounded game for Ayo.
