It was a game of runs in the first half and was tied at 36-36 after the first 20 minutes. The second half was owned by John A Logan as they played outstanding defense converting turnovers into transition points along with sharing the ball on the offensive end. Logan went on to win by a comfortable margin of 81-57. Here is our 10 Best: John A Logan vs Kaskaskia featuring the standouts from this contest.
MVP
SG Jalen Perry (John A Logan – Sophomore)
Perry is a two guard that can really score. In this game he showed more of a complete game. He has good size on the perimeter with the ability to shoot it off the catch. Perry drilled multiple threes in rhythm. Gets elevation on his shot and finds the weak spot in the defense to get an open look. Also drilled a sick step back mid-range jumper. He passed the ball very well for an off guard. Made sound reads. Got on the glass well for a guard. Perry scored 20 points. Mid-major prospect.
Best offensive performance
PG Chad Culbreath (John A Logan – Sophomore)
Culbreath might not be the biggest point guard, but man can he control a game from the lead guard spot. In the first half he was phenomenal making plays. Keeps the ball on a string weaving through traffic in the half court. Works well in the pick and roll as both a scorer and passer. Loves to get in the lane for short runners or floaters. Outstanding passer in the half court that throws bullet passes for diems. He had 17 points and 4 assists. Low-major prospect with potential to be a mid-major kid in the right system.
Best defensive performance
SG Will Robinson (John A Logan – Sophomore)
Robinson isn’t the most skilled wing, but you have to love the toughness that he brings to the table. Long and lanky wing that really gets after it on the defensive end of the floor. Active hands that creates steals. Good help defender. Shows the ability he can defend multiple guard and wing positions. Offensively he is best in transition and as a slasher. One play he got a steal, went end to end, and finished with a sweet euro step. Robinson had 8 points. Should be a D2 prospect as a defensively specialist.
Best rebounder
PF Jerome Davis (John A Logan – Sophomore)
Davis is a wide bodied post that is slightly undersized, but has great mobility. He plays with a high motor on the interior. Offensively seals well on the in the paint and creates space inside. Can get up on occasion for a nice dunk. Defensively he contests shots and is a quality area rebounder. Davis projects as a low-major/D2 prospect. He had 15 points.
Best passer
Chad Culbreath from John A Logan shows tremendous vision and feel for passing in both transition and the half court.
Best catch and shoot guy
The best catch and shoot guy in this game was Jalen Perry of John A Logan who got really hot from three in the second half.
Best guy off the bench
PG Tajuan Johnson (Kaskaskia – Freshman)
Johnson was one of KC’s leading scorers coming into the game, but for whatever reason he came off the bench in this one. The combo guard showed plus athleticism. Hit a three off the catch, but was overall inconsistent. Had some turnovers and over dribbled. He had 5 points. One to track going forward.
Best intangibles
SF Anthony Campbell (John A Logan – Sophomore)
Campbell didn’t score a ton, but he has a ton of intangibles. Does the dirty work and gets after it on both ends with his energy and toughness. D2 prospect.
Best under-the-radar performance
SG Ryan Obermeier (Kaskaskia – Sophomore)
Obermeier is a crafty two guard that kept Kaskaskia in the game early. The former Centralia High School standout got to the rack on several occasions including a couple of and-1’s. Finishes well around the cup with body control in traffic. Mostly known as a jump shooter he did hit a pull up contested shot, but most of his points were in the paint or at the line. Defensively especially early he played with a lot of grit getting a couple blocks. Struggled in the second half with turnovers. Small college prospect. He had 14 points.
Best underclassmen
SF Jakari Smith (Kaskaskia – Freshman)
Smith is a strong wing for KC. He attacks strong off the dribble on straight line drives to the rack. Also has a knack for getting on the offensive glass for put backs. Did hit one mid-range jumper, but overall is more of a driver. Smith had 13 points.
More Scouting Reports
PG Allen Billinger (John A Logan – Sophomore)
Really liked what Billinger did in this game. The combo guard pushes it in transition when the ball was in his hands. Good speed in the open floor. Billinger is known as a perimeter shooter, but there is more to his game than just that. He is winning more consistently off the bounce than we had seen in his high school career. He can get to the basket and scores at the rim with good body control. Also is a solid passer that finds teammates in the half court. D2 prospect. He had 12 points.
SG Emile Lewis (John A Logan – Sophomore)
Lewis is a utility guy for John A Logan. He is a plus athlete that is best slashing in the half court. Can hit an occasional open jumper. D2 prospect.
C Steven Cotton (Kaskaskia – Freshman)
Cotton was a pleasant surprise. The 6’6” center has a strong and physical body on the interior for Kaskaskia. He has long arms and really knows how to carve out space inside. Didn’t score much inside, but there are some raw tools there. He did however hit a pair of mid-range jump shots.
PF Dylan Mueller (Kaskaskia – Sophomore)
Mueller is usually a plus shooter especially from the foul line. The skilled face up four man struggled from the charity stripe in this contest. He started off 1-5 from the line. He has added strength in his two years at KC since high school. Had a nice left handed drive early. Pick and pop shooter from mid-range. Plays somewhat physical around the hoop. Limited athletically. He had 4 points. Small college prospect.
SF Steven Julian (Kaskaskia – Sophomore)
Julian was by far and away the best athlete on the floor. We really liked this wing last season when we saw him as a freshman. The hope was that the skill set would emerge in his second year of JUCO ball. Didn’t really see that. He is an explosive athlete in transition that can block shots for a wing including on jump shots. Flashes with a drive every now and then, but is very tentative in the half court. He had 2 points. D2 prospect.
PG Justin Shaw (Kaskaskia – Freshman)
Shaw is a point guard with good length, strength, and athleticism. Funky release on his jump shot, but did hit a couple from 15 feet. Also got an and-1 in transition. Made a couple sloppy passes. One to track for next season as he showed some promise. Shaw had 7 points.
