Center Grove led at the half 27-20 and pulled away in the third quarter outscoring Roncalli 14-6. Center Grove took the easy win over Roncalli 58-36.
Leading scorer: Center Grove: Nate McLain 17. Roncalli: Collin Sonderman 12.
Leading rebounders: Center Grove: Nate McLain 6. Roncalli: Collin Sonderman 5.
MVP: Trayce Jackson-Davis (Center Grove)
While Jackson-Davis didn’t have the flashiest stat line, he impacted the game in just about every way imaginable. He was big in the post and attracted a ton of attention which brought the perimeter defenders in and gave Center Grove a look from the outside and collapsed the defense. Definitely not his most eye-opening game but he really impacted it. He finished with eight points.
Best offensive performance: Collin Sonderman (Roncalli)
Sonderman took a bit to get going and didn’t play much at all in the second quarter but once the second half started he really got going. He had to adjust to Jackson-Davis in the paint because he kept getting blocked but one he learned how to create space he looked pretty good. Scored 12 points and added five rebounds.
Best defensive performance: Trayce Jackson-Davis (Roncalli)
Jackson-Davis was really good down low and shut Sonderman down in the first half. He had three blocks and only allowed four points to Sonderman. He continued his defensive prowess through the game by making life hard on the guys coming into the lane with his length.
Best off the bench performance: Nate McLain (Center Grove)
McLain was so good in this one. Like, really good. He scored 17 points on 7/9 shooting and was getting to the rim so easily. He was 1/3 from behind the arc but rebounded one of those misses and laid it in. He also had six rebounds to lead all players and added a steal and score. An interesting guy that looked like he could do this consistently off the bench.
Best under-the-radar performance: Ben Nicoson (Center Grove)
Nicoson can do everything he is asked to do. A true combo guard he can both play on ball and off ball. He is a really good spot up shooter and was 2/2 from deep in this one. I was really impressed by the way he handled the pressure that Roncalli threw at him. Second time seeing him this year and once again the sophomore impressed me.
Best do-it-all player: Travis Roehling (Center Grove)
Last time I saw Roehling he scored the ball really well, this time he was a bit less aggressive but still played solid and contributed across the board. He had five points, four rebounds, three assists but also added in a block and a steal. He was an all-around solid player in this game and really made it tough on Roncalli because they know he can shoot but also do other things so well. Much like other players tonight, he didn’t really stand out to the casual fan but really stood out to me.
Best intangibles: Kellen Schreiber (Center Grove)
Schreiber is loud on the bench encouraging his teammates and at times, almost coaching his team along with coach Hahn. He is a short and stocky forward and stays inside the paint and he is definitely a great teammate to have. He does all the little things and keeps his team energized. He is the seventh or eighth man off the bench but impacts the game with his attitude.
Best underclassman: Spencer Piercefield (Center Grove)
Besides the obvious Jackson-Davis and the better performing Nicoson (in this game at least), Piercefield is a really solid sophomore started on a young Center Grove team. He struggled getting his shot tonight but played really good defense and shut down the Roncalli guards. He had four points and three rebounds and didn’t seem like he contributed much but he really buckled it down on the defensive end. We know he can score too.
Best player we didn’t see: Christian Stewart (Roncalli)
I was pretty excited to see Stewart again but he didn’t play due to an injury. One of the best scorers in the state shoots it at a high clip and really is the main offense for Roncalli averaging more than 15 points a game but can easily go off for 25+. He’s committed to Marian and is a solid 6′ point guard.
Best play: Nate McLain scores then lays it in off a steal
Roncalli kind of hung around in the third quarter til McLain hit a bucket and then ten seconds later stole a pass and got an easy layup at the other end. This was basically the end for Roncalli who went down four more points in a span of 15 seconds.
