They battled hard in the third quarter to get the deficit down to seven going into the fourth but Pendleton was too much taking the victory 58-41.
Leading scorers: Lapel: Jon Ross Richardson 11, Josiah Hudson 9. Pendleton Heights: Mark Albers 18, Karsten Windlan 11.
Leading rebounder: Lapel: Luke Richardson 4. Pendleton Heights: Eli Pancol 14, Damieon Warrum 7.
MVP: Eli Pancol (Pendleton Heights)
Pancol was better than anyone in this game and it showed from the start. He ripped down 12 rebounds in the first half and while he didn’t score much he filled the stat sheet with six assists and two steals in the game. Pancol scored nine points overall and looked as solid as they come in the game doing everything for Pendleton Heights.
Best offensive performance: Mark Albers (Pendleton Heights)
Albers got off to a slow start but when he did get going he scored in a hurry. He had 12 points in the first half after starting out 0/2 from the field. Albers showed tonight how many different ways he can score by either taking you off the dribble or pulling up for a three-pointer. Albers finished the game with 18 points on 7/15 from the floor.
Best defensive performance: Eli Pancol (Pendleton Heights)
Pancol was the guy tasking with guarding Lapel’s top player, Jon Ross Richardson and shut him down for most of the game. He forced Richardson to shoot just 3/10 from the floor and kept him well under his season average. Pancol did many things great tonight but this may have been the most impressive and instrumental in their win.
Plays of the Game: Pendleton Heights shooting
There was no one certain play of the game but many different times where Pendleton Heights made a three-pointer and stretched the lead back out for Pendleton Heights. First it was Mark Albers then it was Karsten Windlan who came up clutch.
Best under-the-radar performance: Karsten Windlan (Pendleton Heights)
Windlan played really solidly all night long. He scored 11 points and had two assists and two steals. He really impressed me with his touch from beyond the arc and played tough in a game that he really needed to be tough.
Best guy off the bench: Damieon Warrum (Pendleton Heights)
Warrum came off the bench and played some quality minutes for his team. The 6’6 sophomore scored seven points and grabbed seven rebounds and played tough inside. He had a huge block and really pushed the inside guys for Lapel to their limits.
Best shooter: Austin Lyons (Lapel)
Lyons struggled from inside the arc but one he was outside of it he was money. He drained two big threes in the first half to keep Lapel close and showed a quick release on the two shots from the corner he made.
Best underclassman: Luke Richardson (Lapel)
Richardson is already a strong inside player for Lapel. Jon Ross’ little brother looks to have the same build and next year he should be up to the task of taking over the scoring for the team. Didn’t play too well in this one but you can see the skill that he has.
Best player I didn’t mention: Jon Ross Richardson (Lapel)
Richardson is the best player for Lapel but he really struggled tonight only scoring 11 points. He’s a guy that can play inside but then step out beyond the arc and knock down a shot. He’s a 6’5 wing that is committed to Rollins College in Florida and should excel at the D2 school in the future.
Best takeaway: This was a battle between two of the best teams in the county. Since Pendleton Heights won, they should end up winning the championship tomorrow and Lapel should end up being the third place finisher. Tough for it to have to be a semi-final game but we saw who the best and second best team in the county is tonight.
