TOPEKA, Kan. — Prep Hoops takes a look at some of the top prospects and performances at the Topeka Invitational held last Thursday through Saturday. The field featured eight teams, seven from Kansas and one from Missouri.
Teams
Highland Park (Kan.), Lawrence (Kan.), Topeka (Kan.), Topeka West (Kan.), Wichita East (Kan.), Wichita South (Kan.), Wichita Southeast (Kan.), Vashon (Mo.)
Israel Barnes, 6’4, 2018, Wichita Southeast (Kan.)
Can’t say enough good things about this kid: he’s an ultimate competitor, he can score at all three levels, rebounds, defends and is able and willing to carry his team on his back. And does it all in a big, strong, athletic frame that has room to grow. Has just one offer to date from Tulsa, which is mind-blowing. A lot of schools seem to be missing the boat on Barnes.
Joseph Reece, 6’8, 2018, Vashon (Mo.)
Like Barnes, we are shocked this kid doesn’t have more college hype. He reminds you of Tayshaun Price with a long, rangy, athletic frame, and combines a solid all-around skill set at the offensive end with a versatile skill set at the defensive end. Has the ability to knock down 3s, rebound at a high level and can guard all over the floor.
Koray Gilbert, 6’4, 2017, Vashon (Mo.)
Is probably more of a shooting guard than a traditional 3 man, Gilbert has a smooth left-handed 3-point stroke and has the ability to light up a scoreboard.
Jariah Taylor, 6’5, 2017, Wichita South (Kan.)
Has a lot of physical tools, is an athletic kid with an explosive first step off the dribble and combines the ability to play above the rim with a nice all-around skill set. Has a smooth perimeter jumper and can play inside and out.
Anthony Selden, 6’5, 2018, Lawrence (Kan.)
Some of his all-around skills are still a work in progress, but his athleticism is off the charts. Selden has the ability to throw down highlight reel type dunks, both in transition and in the half court. He can rebound and score in the post at times.
Larry White, 6’4, 2018, Highland Park (Kan.)
White is an athletic wing player with a physical build and a versatile skill set, especially at the defensive end. He can block shots in the paint, or switch and defend a perimeter player.
