He is stellar on the defensive side of the ball. Just like his teammate Davion Williams, Kmare has offers to play D1 football. To be completely honest, I’m not quite sure why he doesn’t have any D1 offers to play basketball, as I believe he could be a very effective point guard at the mid-major level.
Here’s my take on Carey’s game:
Strengths:
Playmaking – He is very good at setting up his teammates for open shots. He does a good job at looking into the next level of defense while breaking down his man. He has a good set of handles and exceptional speed, which makes him tough to stay in front of.
Transition – Carey is at his best when he can use his speed to his advantage in transition. He’s good at keeping his eyes down the floor while pushing the ball in transition. He’s also good at finishing himself in transition. He has elite speed which makes him hard to keep up with.
Defense – This is easily the strongest part of Kmare’s game. He has good footwork and is good at keeping himself in position on defense. Couple that with his elite quickness and speed, and you get a defender who is hard to shake. Also, he has a certain toughness about his defensive game that all the great defenders have. You can’t ask for much more in a perimeter defender.
Speed – He has D1 football offers as a defensive back. That alone should tell you that he is super fast. However, if you don’t believe it, watch Carey play live, and you’ll be impressed with how fast he is. It seems like he’s just gliding down the court, as he makes blowing by defenders seem effortless. He’s very good at changing direction at top speed, which is a very valuable skill to have in basketball.
Areas For Development:
Shooting – While Carey has many skills required to be a solid point guard at the next level, I believe he needs to improve his shooting if he wants to play D1 basketball. He’s only 6’0″, so if he wants to separate himself from bigger, taller guards, he’s going to have to become a knockdown shooter, at least off the catch. Also, if he can develop a consistent pull-up midrange jumper, that will serve him well, as it will make him particularly difficult to guard in pick-and-roll situations given his elite speed and blow-by ability.
Vertical – While Carey’s vertical is by no means below average, it doesn’t standout as a strength in his game. It’s not necessary to be able to dunk over everybody to thrive in basketball, (think Isaiah Thomas, Chris Paul, Kemba Walker) however, college coaches would rather give out scholarships to taller guards who can elevate. If Carey could up his vert a bit and start dunking in games, I believe that would help significantly in picking up that D1 offer.
