Continue ReadingNorthWood is undefeated, atop of the 3A polls and looking like a legit contender come this March for a state title run. Among the players that putting up big numbers this season, NorthWood’s Vincent Miranda is looking like one of the best. He’s leading the senior core of NorthWood into the toughest stretch of games they have all year with Fort Wayne Dwenger and Warsaw coming up soon.
“I think we have really come into our own as a team,” Miranda said of his team. “The last couple years we played a certain type of way with Braxton (Linville) and Dakiryon (Fox) with a lot of ball screens, this team is a little different. I think we can really bunker down defensively and get down into people. I think that is one of our strengths.”
Vincent has really taken ahold of his spot on this roster, a leader, and with that he’s had some examples to circle back to as he’s been apart of NorthWood’s great run over the last few years. Since Miranda made it to NorthWood as a freshman, this team is 77-9. They haven’t lost more than three games in a season.
“I had such a great example ahead of me with Braxton and D.K., on just how to lead a team,” Miranda said of the players that came before him. Even before with John, Zach, and Will just showing how to lead a team and just how to bring the team together.”
For Miranda, a big reason for his personal success is his jumper. He’s really started to make it a high-end weapon for himself and is using it more now than he ever has. It has allowed him to become a guy capable of scoring 30+ points in any game on their schedule. Take into account just how hard he plays and the effort he gives and you have a difference-maker.
“I think my jumpshooting, particularly, I have improved in. It is kind of good to see the hard work I have been putting in is paying off. I think one thing I can work on is my ball handling because that is going to be vital at the next level.”
For colleges, Miranda is being looked at as a combo guard, a guy that can play on or off the ball and now has enough offense that you can match him up with a number of different guards in a lineup. To date, Indiana Tech and Goshen College are the two offers he has in hand with schools like IU-South Bend, Taylor, Marian, and Wabash in his top group.
As for which school is going to be a fit, academics might be a difference-maker for him.
“I want to major in biochemistry,” Miranda said. “So, academics at the college level will be very important for me. Somewhere that will put me in a good position after college and then as well as somewhere where I can fight for minutes at a good level right away.”
Wabash has been a school on Vincent for a while now and they are making a push with their academics and their ability to give early minutes.
“There academics are very high, that is one thing that is very important and they definitely have that. I like their coaches. Coach (Patrick) Sullivan has been in contact with me this fall and now. They have been pretty good to talk to.”
A decision isn’t likely to come until after the season and after a potential state title run for NorthWood. Recruiting is on the backburner for now but he is still taking a look at his options.
“I want to take a visit to IU-South Bend. They kind of came up on the scene late at the start of the season. I met their assistant coach and a couple weeks later met their head coach, so I would like to see where the academics are and tour the campus and see how that goes.”
