South Carolina’s Race for Mr. Basketball
The race for Mr. Basketball in South Carolina is off to a great start. The list of players that are having a season that would earn this award is full of big-time college basketball recruits. In this article we take a look at the top candidates for the award and how their season is coming along. There are a number of players having great seasons, but these five are taking it to another level.
Jalek Felton- The nephew of former North Carolina point guard and NBA star Raymond Felton, Jalek is averaging 27 points per game for Gray’s Collegiate. The Mullins, South Carolina native is a big-time scorer, has a high basketball IQ and is very athletic.
Nic Claxton– The future Georgia Bulldog is playing his senior season at Legacy Charter in Greenville, South Carolina. The 6-foot-10 big man is averaging 17.6 points, 7.6 rebounds and almost 3 blocks per game this season. He has helped lead Legacy Charter to a 12-5 record overall this season.
Clyde Trapp- The Clemson recruit has been putting up 21.8 points per game to go along with 9.7 rebounds and 2.7 steals this season. Lower Richland has a 8-3 record so far playing a tough schedule.
Jordan Davis- The Dutch Fork HS senior has been averaging 21 points and 7 rebounds per game. He will play his college basketball at Dayton University. The 6-foot-4 shooting guard has led his team to a 10-4 record so far this season.
Tariq Simmons- The 6-foot-2 Simmons has been averaging 17 points, 4 rebounds, 4 assists and 3 steals per game for Keenan High School. He has scholarship offers from Charleston Southern, Georgia Southern and College of Charleston.
Temetrius “Ja” Morant– The 6-foot-3 Morant picked Murray State as his college destination. He is a big time scorer with a knack for knowing how to get the ball in the basket. He has a quick first-step that will transition well at the next level.
