With the 6’1″ Talton at the controls of the offense of a balanced team, the Panthers are off to an 11-1 start, which earned them a spot in the Missouri Class 3 rankings. The Panthers were 10-0 before losing their first game of the season to Clopton in the semifinals of the Clopton Tournament. Talton scored a game-high 22 points in the game, but he thought the loss would be a good wake-up call for his team.
“We’ve been playing pretty well this season,” Talton said. “But getting that ‘L” kind of makes us humble and have to work harder and come back even stronger.”
Talton joined Monroe City’s starting lineup as a freshmen last season and he averaged 7.6 points on a team that finished with a 17-10 record. He was primarily a facilitator as a freshman, but he has added even more scoring as a sophomore as his skill set has grown.
“I’ve been much more aggressive on offense this year,” Talton said. “I was a little more timid as a freshman and I passed the ball a lot. I’ve been looking to score a little bit more this season.”
With his size, Talton is one of the bigger point guards in his area of the state. Combined with his athleticism and skill set, he is very difficult to guard, especially off the dribble. He has the ability to get to the basket and score on twisting and off-balance shots. Talton also has a nice pull up jumper on the move.
“My biggest strength is attacking the basket,” Talton said. “I’m one of the bigger guards around my area, so that gives me an advantage. I still need to improve on shooting the basket because that will help my game out a whole lot.
