That is why a lot of times you will see players slowly become better and better as they get put in more difficult situations. For NorthWood’s Luke Zurcher, he’s been asked to be more of an impact player for his high school team the last few years and he’s starting to get better and better.
The 6’1 guard has always been a player that has shown flashes as an underclassmen but, not until last season, had really had any big games. Now, Zurcher is starting to step up at the right time as a senior. His ball handling and jump shooting, making the biggest strides.
“I think it has progressed a lot,” Zurcher said of his game. “Especially since my sophomore year with my first year on Varsity. I’ve been working hard this summer and this season so I think I have seen a bit of improvement. I’m just trying to be an all-around good player. Whether that is shooting, passing, rebounding, whatever my team needs that night I’m trying to do.”
He’s a core piece of this undefeated NorthWood team. He, along with Vincent Miranda and Trey Bilinski, they have been a core group that has grown together the last few years and now look to try and make a run at a state championship in 3A.
“We have lost some good seniors so me, Vinny, and Trey, we have all stepped up and some of the younger guys have too. It is definitely a bigger role for me than past years. My team is really looking to me for leadership and scoring. I like it.”
Luke is a solid guard who can play on or off the ball. His ball handling and size would be a nice addition to a team trying to add some depth and size to their guard spots. He’s still coming out of his shell a bit but has the capabilities to really improve once he gets into a college system. His jump shot is now pretty solid and gives him some offense to his game and if you can get to where you can play him on the ball full time, he’s going to be a pretty good player.
So far, only really Manchester is recruiting Zurcher. He would be a good fit for most DIII programs and NAIA programs looking for some upside at the guard spots. Luke said he is looking to major in business or sports management.
