The senior sharpshooter signed last fall with Augustana College, and was able to do so by being proactive with his own recruitment.
“I really liked the visit I had to that school, and I felt it would be a really good fit for me,” said Cassens.
“My parents are actually from the area. And last year Augustana was No.1 in the country, and when I was contacting schools last summer they were one of the schools I emailed.”
Augustana got back to Cassens and had him send a video, soon after he took a visit to the middle of the Midwest.
“They have amazing coaches and a really strong athletic program. And I thought they had a lot of resources for me to help my game and be successful for a really good team,” said Cassens.
“And I’m pretty good at school and they had a lot of the academic goals I was looking for.”
The Vikings will be getting a good-sized sharpshooter with a high basketball IQ.
“Definitely my best skill is shooting; I’m a spot-up 3-point shooter, but I can shoot it off of screens and off the dribble pretty well now too,” said Cassens. “I also think I’m a pretty smart player, with a high IQ, and I show that with my passes”
For the time being though, he’s looking to get to a state tournament with the Jaguars.
“My coach wants me to be the coach on the court for us,” said Cassens.
“We’ve actually had a pretty young team the last two years, and we have 10 seniors this year. Right now we have me and another kid at around 15 points per game, and they rely on us a lot to score.”
He added: “Our goals are to win a league title, and to get to the state tournament.”
