However, there are some really special players at the point that are worth taking a look at. The one that has made the most strides since the summer is Blackhawk Christian guard Jalan Mull.
The 5’11 point guard has moved from Northrop and now making an immediate and massive impact for Blackhawk, leading the to be one of the top contenders for a State Championship this year. With all of the pieces around him, it has only accentuated his skill and just how good he can be in the right system. However, in order for Blackhawk to make it to state, they are going to have to overcome the massive loss of Drake Thompson. He’ll be out possibly for the rest of the season.
“It is going to be tough without Drake,” Mull said. “We just have to come together and find our shooters more, play together more. We can do it but it will be tough.”
This team, even without Drake, is playing really well. They have lots of guys that are making plays like Lucas Kroft and Luke Sassmanshausen, and Mull seems to be at the heart of it all. Not because of his scoring, but because of his vision and passing. His feel for the flow of a game and just how to create to feed all of the guys on his team that can shoot, it really makes this team fun to watch.
“We fit so well together,” Mull said of why this team is playing so well. “Everybody knows their role. Nobody tries to force too much. Everybody knows what they are supposed to be doing. We just fit really well together.”
Last year, Jalan was at Northrop and in a much different role, one that required him to be more focused on scoring the ball and not creating. For most kids, this is what they would prefer. However, that is what makes what Jalan Mull is doing so special. He’s playing like he’s trying to rack up assists, not points, and in turn it is allowing everyone on this team to play successful.
“Last year, I was kind of on and off the main ball handler,” Mull said. “This year I’m the main ball handler. I have the ball in my hands a lot more, I find my shooters a lot more. Shooters are definitely here more than they were at Northrop. Overall, we have a lot more shooters and a lot easier to get more assists that way.”
The offensive part of Mull’s game is the area where he is going to have to improve but really, it isn’t that far off and he says that his jump shot and scoring is where he is putting in the time.
As for recruiting, things are a little bit all over the place, mainly due to the difference of play in such a short period of time. He’s getting calls and mail from a number of programs including Central Michigan, Wisconsin, Furman, Grand Valley State, Ohio Dominican, and Saint Francis. The big thing is to see where his game goes the rest of this season and if he can help lead Blackhawk to Indianapolis in late March. Then, he’ll be able to show off just what he can do in front of a bigger audience.
