One particular player that caught our eye over break was Braelyne Compton of Terre Haute North. The 6’3 wing in the 2017 class has been a player we have liked in the past but has yet to come onto the radar of many others.
Compton is a solid wing with size and skill and a really improved jumper. He’s putting up points this season and giving Terre Haute North another weapon. He was at Northview earlier in this career before transferring over to North. Now, he has helped them to a 10-3 record and looking to have a chance at the Sectional 12 Championship.
For colleges, Compton presents as a good project with upside. He has all the raw skills and a body that is going to fill out really well, really quickly. However, he’s nowhere near where he can be as an offensive player. He has the handles to drive and finish at the rim but his game is more built around him perimeter jumper, which has become very good.
“It is kind of just like, when I let it come to me I usually play a little bit better,” Compton said of where he has made improvements to his game. “When we get out in transition, get the rebound, everybody moves the ball well and everybody tends to play well and I tend to have a good game today.”
The biggest areas of concern for Compton is his rebounding and defense. He’s working on improving those this season stating “not to ball watch as much, get over the ball, get over screens just help my team out.”
With the depth of guards in the class of 2017, most come as point guards or smaller shooters. Compton will give you size and a good jumper from the perimeter with upside that comes with the body and athleticism.
