Trey McGowens2018 prospect Trey McGowens burst onto the scene last spring at The Ashton Arnold Invitational hosted by Lamont Simmons and The SC Raptors Elite AAU organization. This tournament was my first time seeing McGowens and I left impressed with his overall game and basketball IQ.
His Game
The 6-foot-2 point guard plays at Wren High School outside of Greenville, South Carolina. He is averaging 20.2 points and 7.2 assists per game while helping Wren High School to a 10-3 overall record. He is a scoring point guard that can knock down shots all the way to the three-point line. He can find the open man while attacking the perimeter and getting into the lane. He is good in the open floor, always finding the open teammate in transition. He has good size and long arms and can play above the rim when attacking the basket and can finish with either hand near the rim. He is a good defender with his size and can stay in front of his man. He has good instincts on defense for making blocks and getting his hands in passing lanes. A gifted athlete who also excels on the football field.
Recruitment
He picked up eight offers since The Ashton Arnold tournament playing with the SC Raptors travel team. South Carolina State, Mercer, Wofford, Southern Utah, Furman, Western Carolina, Appalachian State and North Carolina A&T have all offered. Playing with the SC Raptors program has helped his recruitment with the schedule Simmons’ makes the Raptors play.
What’s Next
A strong finish to this season and a long run in the SCHSL playoffs should help McGowens’ recruitment and another strong summer playing with the Raptors organization is sure to bring some more college interest and offers to the table.
