The 6-foot-9 forward is coached at York Prep by Frank Hamrick, who had this to say about his sophomore, “I tell every coach who ask about DJ, DJ Burns doesn’t need basketball. He will be successful in life with or without it. DJ has great grades, is a great speaker, singer, and musician and he is very intelligent. He plays the game not because he needs it, he plays because he loves it. He is without a doubt the best passing big man I have seen. He has great court vision and great hands. It’s rare to find a kid who can play the post well and still be one of the top guys on your team in assists and steals. DJ is a special player but he is more than that, he is a special person.”
All-Around Game
Burns is one of the better defenders in the country for his size, he understands the game and has a high basketball IQ. He has a great ability to pass the basketball and can see the floor like a guard. He possesses a soft touch around the basket and has improved his shooting range to around the 15′ to 17′ range. His footwork is improving rapidly and is establishing a hook shot that is tough to guard. He has a great work ethic and is always in the gym getting better. One of the biggest characteristics of his game is his ability to be a leader at a young age.
Offers
Among the schools that have offered the promising sophomore are South Carolina State, College of Charleston, Virginia Tech, Lousiana State, North Florida, Western Kentucky, Tennessee, Georgia Tech, Georgia, Western Carolina, Davidson, North Carolina A&T, Winthrop and Tulane.
He is averaging double-double stats per game on a team that has a handful of Division One recruits. 6’6 wing Jaron Williams had three offers, senior guard Travis Chisholm, Charleston transfer Vincent Cole who has committed to College of Charleston, and 2020 Keyan Mims.
Nike Circuit
He plays on the Nike EYBL circuit with The Georgia Stars, his travel coach Chris Williams states. “He is a young Zach Randolph, a lefty with a nice touch around the rim and great footwork to get past other bigs. DJ has a great mid-range game for his size which makes him a standout.”
After College
Burns sports a 3.4 grade point average and is taking advanced classes already in high school. He has a interest in Engineering and Sports Medicine after his playing career is over.
