MVP: AJ Martinka (Stanwood)
6-6 guard/forward was all over the floor in the victory against the Warriors. He scored 20 points, grabbed five boards and also provided four assists. Defensively, he didn’t record a steal or a block, but did guard one of the Warriors best offensive weapons, Keaton McKay and defended him relatively well.
Play of the game: AJ Martinka’s defense in the third quarter on Keaton McKay
The Warriors, led by McKay had made a bit of a run in the third quarter to bring the Spartans lead down to 10 points. With a chance to cut it to seven points, McKay took the ball at the top of the three-point line looking for another bucket, but Martinka, with his size, forced McKay into a tough shot. The Spartans extended their lead after the defensive stop.
Best offensive player: Keaton McKay (Edmonds-Woodway)
The 6-0 guard at times couldn’t miss, especially from the three-point line. He ended up scoring 20 points after making five three-pointers, some that were extremely tough shots.
Best guy off the bench: Trygve DeBoer (Stanwood)
DeBoer provided a nice spark for the Spartans off the bench. He provided five points, and played some tough defense to help hold the Warriors to 37 percent shooting from the field.
Best intangibles: Austin Wilhonen (Stanwood)
The 6-5 post player was all over the boards for the Spartans. He grabbed 17 rebounds, while also adding nine points. Wilhonen also played some tough defense while clogging up the lane in the key.
Best under-the-radar peformance: Quinton Borseth (Stanwood)
Borseth was hot from the start. The 6-4 post player dropped 21 points, while providing some highlight post moves and even hitting a three-pointer with a smooth touch. He also dished out some no look assists to add to his teams win.
Best underclassmen: Erroll Richards (Edmonds-Woodway)
The 6-0 sophomore forward, Erroll Richards filled in for injured Mutdung Bol and flashed in his brief minutes. He scored two points, but was mostly effective defensively adding two steals and a block.
Best player comparison: Stanwood’s Quinton Borseth to Pau Gasol
There was something about Borseth’s game that really stood out. He had really good footwork in the post that let him get excellent looks for easy points. He also made a deep three-pointer that had some nice touch to it. But his comparison to Gasol didn’t stop there, he provided a couple of no-look assists in the key to cutting teammates, something Gasol is so good at.
Best coaching strategy: Both coaches playing a full-court press defense
From the buzzer, both teams played some suffocating full-court defenses that created a fun up-tempo game. The Spartans defense was flying all over the court and forced 17 turnovers, while the Warriors defense forced 14 turnovers.
