Johnson led the Sumter Gamecocks to a easy 54-39 victory over the Socastee Braves. Johnson started off hot for the Gamecocks and was just so effective in the paint to set the tone early. Johnson according to Head Coach Shawn Jones has several football offers on the table for next season.
Play of the Game : Jaylenn Corbett – Sumter (2017)
Corbett had back to back dunks at the 3:30 mark third quarter to take the Gamecocks lead to 43-24. Corbett a small forward has great length and really is quite versatile on the floor with his athleticism.
Best Offensive Player : Isaih Moore – Sumter (2018)
Moore really came on the scene back in the fall and has really grown into quite a prospect for the Gamecocks. Moore will run with the highly touted Georgia Stars on the EYBL circuit this coming April according to Jones.
Best Defensive Player : Jaylenn Corbett – Sumter (2017)
Corbett was just all over the floor with his athletic ability. Corbett blocked a few shots and had many deflections in the paint
Best Intangibles : Andrew Gardner – Socastee (2018)
Gardner really doesn’t have a true position. Gardner is for sure sure not the most athletic kid on the floor but, he does really see the floor well when handling it. Gardner has the tools but just needs to define his body and play with some more passion at times.
Best Guy off the Bench : Jaylenn Corbett – Sumter (2017)
Corbett only scored 5 points today but was effective with his defense on the floor leading to several Gamecock points.
Best Under the Radar Performance : Andrew Tiller – Sumter (2017)
Tiller just a 5’8 point guard really looks to score the ball while on the floor. Tiller scored 10 points here today in leading the Gamecocks. Tiller will need to entertain junior college options according to Coach Jones.
Best Underclassmen : Calvin Felder – Sumter (2019)
Felder is a key figure of the future at Sumter HS. Felder came off the bench here today and just scored 4 points in the victory. Felder has all the tools to be a very good player down the road.
Best Project to Watch : Ryan Missildine – Sumter (2017)
Missildine is a 6’8 versatile post player that comes off the bench for a very talented Gamecocks team. Missildine understands his role of running the floor and playing defense.
Best Takeaway :
The Sumter Gamecocks have a healthy team for the first time and could make a big push to the SCHSL 5A State Tourney. Socastee sat Jason Cudd (South Carolina signee) and Gardner for 1/2 of the third quarter and all of the 4th quarter for lack of effort. The Braves will really have to fight to play the playoffs but if it’s going to happen Cudd and Gardner have to be on board
