Continue ReadingTuesday night we were at Centralia for the Orphans game against Belleville Althoff. The question on everyone’s mind over the last couple days has been whether or not the state’s top wing and SLU commit Jordan Goodwin would play after injuring his shoulder and sitting out the second half on Saturday against East St. Louis. Goodwin is one of the toughest kids I have ever covered. He said that he was going to try to play and that he did. As usual he put on a show! Centralia hung with Althoff early and got it close late, but Althoff controlled it most of the night with a well-balanced senior attack. They won 73-61. Read about the top performers in our 10 Best from the game!
MVP
SG Jordan Goodwin (Althoff – 2017 – SLU)
If you didn’t know Goodwin had a serious shoulder injury just days earlier you couldn’t have known it by his play. He was super aggressive as always. What was different about this game is he did it more scoring with his jumper than we have ever seen in the past. JGood opened with a bank three from deep followed by a turnaround fade away from 15 feet on the baseline. He was definitely feeling it. Took a few unforced ones including one from the volleyball line, but overall he shot it very well. Hit multiple mid-range jumpers in the stop and pop. Also got to the rack mostly in transition. Passed it well when he drew defenders. Goodwin had 26 points, 5 rebounds, 4 assists, and 3 steals.
Play of the game
Goodwin got a defensive rebound, took it end to end, and jumped really far from the hoop. Double clutched it and put it in.
Best offensive performance
SF Marvin Bateman (Althoff – 2017)
Bateman is one of the more underrated wings in the state. He has shot the ball well this season. That is what he does, but sometimes he has had cold streaks. None of that this season at least in the games we have seen. The long and lanky 6’4” small forward is a plus shooter off the catch with a quick release. Ran the floor in transition including scoring on an and-1. Bateman had 17 points. D2 prospect.
Best defensive performance
SG Edwyn Brown (Althoff – 2017)
Brown is a rangy 6’5” shooting guard with a long and slender frame. Slick handles through traffic and loves to get out and run in transition. Can hit an occasional three. Passed it well in the half court. Tough on ball defender with active hands. He had 10 points. D3 prospect that tells us he will probably go football route.
Best rebounder
SF Javon Williams (Centralia – 2018)
Williams is a potential D1 football prospect in the junior class, but he continues to produce for the basketball team. At 6’2” the small forward is built like a truck. Physical body. He dominated scoring inside with his quickness around the hoop for finishes and layups. Rebounds well for his size. Also handles it a little better than I thought before showing some shake. He had 22 points.
Best passer
PG CJ Coldon (Althoff – 2017)
Coldon is a point guard that runs the show for Althoff. Did just that against Centralia. He pushes the tempo in transition. Rebounded well in this one regularly grabbing the ball off the glass and pushing end to end for scores or assists. Had a couple tip ins and cut strong to the hoop away from the ball for several scores. As a passer he was outstanding kicking to shooters. Coldon had 17 points. Would be a D2 prospect, but will go the football route.
Best catch and shoot guy
SF Dawson Berry (Centralia – 2017)
Berry is a smart and crafty 6’4” wing. He can really shoot the basketball from the perimeter. Moves well without the ball both cutting to get open for threes as well as cutting toward the hoop for layups in Centralia’s offense. Three ball is where he stands out with elevation and a pure shooting stroke. He had 18 points. D3/NAIA prospect.
Best intangibles
SF Dante Ray (Althoff – 2017)
Ray is a 6’4” small forward that has broad shoulders and good athleticism. Quality area rebounder that high points the ball and fights on the defensive glass. Has potential defensively guarding on the perimeter. Hit a wing three. Small college prospect because of his potential athletically and physically.
Best under-the-radar performance
SG Jordan Maines (Centralia – 2018)
Maines is a catch and shoot three point threat from deep. The 5’11” guard is a pure shooter off the catch when he moves without the ball. Also got a tip in. He had 7 points.
Best underclassmen
PF Patrick Ready (Althoff – 2020)
We only caught the second half of the JV game, but Ready jumped off the floor with his upside. The 6’6” power forward has a long and lanky body with a frame that he should be able to add strength over the next few years. Soft touch around the hoop and even showed a turnaround fade away. Shot blocking presence. He had 12 points in the JV game. One to track for sure!
