MAIN COURT
12:45pm. Mpls North vs Minnehaha Academy
The Storyline: The preseason #1 in Class A against the preseason #1 in Class AA. The teams favored to win their classes. Two Minneapolis teams. The rivalry is there.
Match-Up: Jalen Suggs vs Isaac Johnson. North starts Odell Wilson and one of the Hines brothers so that puts Isaac at three and you can bet that he will spend time on Suggs who is now 6-foot-3 and scored 42 against Orono.
Notes. The defending Class A champion North Polars come into the game 1-1 and both games were against Class AAAA teams. The Polars lost by 14 to Apple Valley but beat Edina by ten on Tuesday. The Hornets weren’t able to slow down Isaac Johnson, headed to Western Illinois next year, who scored 28 (had 21 against the Eagles)….The Polars are a much bigger team than expected (while still very agile) as they added 6-foot-7 junior transfers Da’Kei and Da’Koi Hines from Gary, Indiana….Odell Wilson has had two double figure scoring games this year along with Johnson…Some of the sting has been taken from this game with JaVonni Bickham breaking his hand against Totino-Grace who beat the Redhawks on Tuesday…The Redhawks still have a deep group of guards led by Jalen Suggs, Terry Lockett, Lorenzo Smith, and Kaden Johnson, They will need Jose’ Williamson to step up big Saturday with Bickham out…
2:15pm. Robbinsdale Armstrong vs Tartan
The Storyline: A pair of Class AAAA squads that are usually among the best in their class. A couple teams that I don’t recall playing much in the past so a fresh new match-up.
Match-Up: Race Thompson vs Joevon Walker. Both of these teams have a plethora of ball handlers and scoring wings so Thompson and Walker will likely see each other often. Thompson is one of the state’s most versatile players inside and out while Walker is one of the better back to the basket players.
Notes: Armstrong plays their first game tonight against DeLaSalle. The Falcons will play six of their first seven games away from home and in those games includes the Islanders, Titans, Park Center, Osseo, St. Louis Park, and Totino-Grace so that is a tough start….Top 75 national talent Race Thompson leads the Falcons after a 13 and 7 season last year and a huge summer…Guards Isaiah Rollins and Davonte Said-El are the other returning experienced talents but there are several seniors coming from the JV who are quality and there is young talent…Tartan beat Richfield by 27 in their opener led by the 24 points of Jordan Horn who is headed to Siena next year. The Titans also got ten from the talented King Myles. Between Myles, Noah Whalen, Jordan Thompson, Horn, and Walker that is five experienced and talented seniors. Antwan Kimmons is a Tartan sophomore to watch…
EAST COURT
12:00pm. Mpls Patrick vs Marshall
The Storyline: This is all about a Class AAA battle between contenders. Both are top ten teams in Class AAA and both are teams that have several weapons.
Match-Up: Weston Baker Magrath vs Lamarr Wood. There are many potential good match-ups in this game (Jordan Lynn vs Trey Lance will be good) but we love the inside battle between two 6-foot-7 and very agile power forwards. Magrath is one of the state’s most explosive finishers, Wood is one of the top unsigned prospects in the state.
Notes: Jordan Lynn scored 29 for the Patriots in the Henry opener when they beat Washburn by 14. Savion Scott had 12, Lamarr Wood 11, and sophomore Rashaud Rollins and senior Dimitri Sanner-Robinson contributed good minutes as well. The Patriots play Roosevelt this evening…Marshall hammered a quality Redwood Valley program 82-56 on Tuesday and will beat Worthington this evening as they get ready for the big game with Henry…The Tigers bring back nearly everybody from last year’s three loss team. Marshall got 20 and 13 from Weston Baker Magrath in the opener, another 20 from senior guard Zach Bloemker, plus SD School of Mines signed talent Mitchell Sueker totaled 13/4/3/3. Magrath is signed Nebraska-Kearney…
1:45pm. Woodbury vs Chaska
The Storyline: If you look at the Class AAAA rankings now, and likely throughout the year you will see these two teams listed. Both have a nice group of seniors and both have a chance to make state.
Match-Up: Jeremiah Coddon vs Andrew Kallman, Myles Hanson vs Michael Jones. I couldn’t pick one, I think both of these will be very good. Kallman, headed to Northern State next year, was the biggest stock booster of the off-season while people at Woodbury feel that Coddon should be at that level too. Hanson, headed to Columbia, will have a fun battle with Jones who has quickly become a hot topic for 2018 prospects.
Notes: Woodbury hammered Johnson 94-50 on Tuesday getting 30 points from Michael Jones and another 21 from Jermemiah Coddon. Ike Thilgen is a guy we recently featured, he scored 3-4 times and there was also contributions from Nolan Glunz and Quinn McMorrow…The Hawks have played two games beating Eagan by 20 and Tonka by 11. The Skippers were up by ten but then Chaska turned around with a 21 point swing the rest of the game…Myles Hanson had 31 in the opener for the Hawks…We talked about Thilgen being the forgotten Woodbury guy, the guy people need to also know for Chaska is sophomore Cole Nicholson who had 14 in the opener. Andrew Kallman also had 14 in the opener…
