Three Up
Farmington (2-0). Nice start for the Tigers crushing Century 68-31 and Mayo 70-46. Keep in mind those are struggling programs, but also keep in mind we weren’t sure how much better Farmington was going to be then them. And we’ve found out they are much better than those two. After scoring 14 a game as a junior Sam Wilson, a long time NHR favorite because of his work ethic, has scored 65 points in two games. Wilson has been unstoppable and Coach Tharen Johnson is also getting quality play from sophomore Miles Mendes (second leading scorer) and others. The way the Tigers have started they should also have a solid shot at beating Fridley and Shakopee although they don’t play those games for over a week.
St. Thomas Academy (2-0). New Coach Jason Birr has his Cadets looking good. They beat Holy Family by three scores and then beat St. Croix Lutheran by nine. With St. Anthony coming up tomorrow they will face a step up in experienced competition but that team will have to contend with Jack Thompson who has been fantastic so far scoring 52 points in two games. Thompson is a sophomore guard and in support is leading returning scorer Sam Vascellaro and junior George Stewart.
Willmar (3-0). The Cards are 3-0, let that sink in for a second. Willmar has won ten games in the past two seasons! This year they have beaten Zimmerman (72-64), ranked Monticello (65-52), and Dassel-Cokato (67-56). Junior point guard Noah Slager is scoring 20 plus a game and getting held from senior Dalton Rambow who is also hitting for double figures. Forward Tyler Johnson has been a Rodman style worker worried more about boards than points.
Others: East Ridge (2-0), Rogers (2-0), Northfield (2-0), Big Lake (3-0), St. Peter (3-0)
Three Down
St. Paul Central (0-3). The Minutemen lost a lot so there was a bit of a learning curve to start the year and the schedule of Columbia Heights, CDH, and St. Anthony Village made things even tougher. Central has a chance to rebound soon but they also have games against Delano and Orono in the near future.
Monticello (0-3). After a state run last year I seriously doubt anybody thought they would go 0-3 to start the year. The losses to Orono and Willmar where by double figures while the loss to Sauk Rapids-Rice was by two scores.
Red Wing (0-2). Red Wing lost a lot to graduation so an overtime loss early in the year to Mankato East isn’t a big surprise. Losing to Hastings early in the year was, and an 0-2 record is also a big surprise for this program. They do have Century coming up so they should get a win there but the schedule is not east with JM, Austin, and Byron coming up soon too.
