Continue ReadingOn Thursday, we made our way down to Jeffersonville for the Ted Throckmorton Memorial. With a combination of Kentucky and Indiana programs, we got to see quite a few teams and players from the southern part of the state. We recap the day.
MVP: Alec Burton and Zach Callahan (Danville)
While Burton was pretty nonexistent in the first part of the game, his 9-point fourth quarter was huge and really helped put Danville over the top and got them a huge win over Cathedral. Burton got a couple rebound putbacks in the final minutes when Danville was trying to capture the lead. Callahan had done a lot of work to get Danville to the Championship game and his 16 points along with last bucket with under two minutes to go put Danville up four.
Best Offensive Performance: Hayden Langkabel (Morristown)
Hayden Langkabel went and dropped 30 points against a very athletic and long Southern (KY) squad and it was pretty impressive. He doesn’t get phased by much and really stepped up to keep his team in the game after they were down one of their top players. He shot the ball really well and dished out some nice assists to get his teammates involved too. One of the better all-around games we have seen this week.
Best Defensive Performance: Charles Wilson (Southern, KY)
Wilson was almost the biggest reason why Southern was able to get the win. His on-ball defense was really solid and he created quite a few turnovers early that made life difficult for Morristown. He has quite a bit of lateral quickness and that length is just too much for opposing offenses. The funny thing is he really isn’t that crisp on defense and has a lot he could do to improve.
Best Guy Off The Bench: Jayvon Hatton (Indianapolis Scecina)
The best guy to come off the bench today was Hatton. He provided some production on the offensive end with his shooting ability. His shoot looks super smooth right now and he was able to hit a few and help Scecina pull away in the second half. His length was a big help on the boards as well. He’s starting to put something together and looked great.
Best Intangibles: Gerrin Moore (Jeffersonville)
Moore is a tall wing who can play inside and out and has a solid jumper stretching out to the arc. He’s a really athletic kid and plays tough, doing a lot of work inside in the paint. He can do just about anything and seems to have the work ethic that he’ll go and play tough defense and dive on the floor for you. His three-point shot looks solid but he got hurt early in the second half and didn’t return. Great first look and definitely a college player that coaches would love to have.
Best Under-The-Radar Performance: Nick Walker (Henryville)
Nick was a player we have heard about before but was not really sure what to expect and his performance kind of caught us off guard. He’s a really skilled guard with a great shot and tons of aggressiveness. He plays tough and was the most physical kid on the floor. He was big for Henryville and really jumped on our radar after today.
Best Underclassmen: Manuel Brown (Indianapolis Scecina)
The best underclassmen we saw this day was Manuel Brown. He’s really improved as a lead guard and his explosiveness has come on really quick. He had a few plays that makes you just sit and wait for it. He’s such a great player when it comes to pace, keeping his team moving and getting guys into position to make plays.
Best Prospect We’ve Never Heard Of: Tre Coleman (Jeffersonville)
Coleman was probably the second best underclassmen we saw. The 6’4 freshman came off the bench and started making some big plays starting with his rebounding. He’s got a stellar body for a freshman and with the strength already on the frame it makes him able to play right now and impact the game. One of the best freshman performances we have seen this year.
Best Scorer: Trey Hill (Pleasure Ridge, KY)
Hill is a long, lanky guard who was about as creative a scorer as we have seen in a while. The lefty was really doing well getting to the rim early in the game and finishing with length. He was really good later in the game showing his ability to shoot. His ability to mix and match his shooting and scoring made him really fun to watch.
Best Project Prospect: Kendall Jones (Southern, KY)
Jones is an undersized forward with a great body and some bounce in him. Low post scorer who has a quick jump and some aggression around the rim. When he doesn’t dunk the ball, he can leave the finish a little too soft and miss so he needs to clean that up. However, he is a pretty strong rebounder and while undersized, he produced in this game.
