The first half was filled with fouls for both teams and Lebanon scored 11 of their 23 points from the line en route to a 23-20 lead going into the half.
The second half was all Danville as they held their lead through the second half and squeaked by for the 54-49 victory.
Leading scorers: Danville: Alec Burton 20, Conner Jones 13. Lebanon: Trevor Lakes 19, Carson Burtron 7.
Leading rebounders: Danville: Alec Burton 7, Zach Callahan 5. Lebanon: Jaylen Washington 6.
MVP: Alec Burton (Danville)
Burton was a force inside for Danville all game long. He is really long and super athletic and can finish against taller players. He attempted a tip dunk which showed off his athleticism. Showed an okay jumper from the outside and he will be really good if he can develop a consistent mid-range jumper. He led all scorers with 20 points. A football kid that can get after it on the court as well. A D1 prospect for both sports who is leaning toward a football future.
Best offensive performance: Trevor Lakes (Lebanon)
Lake is a tall wing player and tonight it was a tale of two halves for him. He really struggled in the first half but in the second we saw what makes him so good. He scored six in the first half but scored 13 in the second half. He brought his team back in the low scoring game with two threes in the fourth. This game would have been Lebanon’s is he would have been assertive in the first half.
Best defensive performance: Jaylen Washington (Lebanon)
Washington came away with three huge blocks, including a chase down on an open lay-up. He added in a steal and was really solid all night long. He is a quick smart defender who can guard taller players because he is just so active with his hands and knows where the ball is at all times. He’s a 5’10 junior that really is mostly a defender at this point with a little offense sprinkled in.
Play of the Game: Alec Burton full court pass to Zach Callahan
Late in the game with under 10 seconds remaining, Lebanon missed a shot which Burton grabbed. At the time they were up by three and Callahan was streaking down the court. He flung it to Callahan who was fouled and drained two free throws putting the game on ice.
Best underclassman: Sam Comer (Danville)
One of the duo of good freshmen Danville has is Comer. He started in the two-guard spot and did not do anything amazing but did everything pretty well. At this point he is more of a role player and not a scorer but he showed he can shoot it, nailing a three-pointer. Comer is a 2020 kid to watch as he already had the IQ of a high level player.
Best under-the-radar performance: Dillon Ware (Danville)
Ware is the other freshman and he comes off the bench first or second each game. He’s a solid post and he scored two points and grabbed two rebounds. Ware is a tall, lanky kid and really impacted this game on the defensive end of the ball and moved around well on the offensive end of the floor.
Best passer: Austin Cowart (Danville)
Cowart plays the point, but he is more of a combo guard. If he plays at the next level he should move to the two-guard spot but he can run the point at the high school level. He looked to drive first and pass second but when he did pass it was to the open man. He had two assists and dished it off quite nicely out of the paint. Would have had more assists but Danville sometimes struggled to finish.
Best shooter: Trevor Lakes (Lebanon)
Lakes was the best shooter in this game. He has a kind of slow release but the top of his shot it so high no one can really block it. He hit two three-pointers, both in the second half. He really struggled with his shot but still scored 19 points. He also knows how to make a bucket in the lane through traffic.
Best rebounder: Zach Callahan (Danville)
Callahan had five rebounds in the game and most impressive was how he got them. The 6’4 guard charged in and grabbed them basically away from others. He grabbed two offensive rebounds and one was a tip-in early in the game. He had a solid night with seven points as well.
Best takeaway: Danville is the real deal
Danville is a top team in 3A and they really solidified that ranking tonight. They are very long and tall with a few scorers that can get after it. They play a tough schedule and they will be well prepared for the tournament. Lebanon will struggle to score points when Lakes is not on, as we saw tonight.
