Continue ReadingBen Davis faced off with Terre Haute North in the first game of the Avon Classic and it did not disappoint. Both teams were neck and neck early with Ben Davis holding a 12-11 edge after one. They opened the second on a 11-1 run and never let Terre Haute North get back closer than eight points.
Ben Davis outscored Terre Haute North 42-29 in the middle two quarters and would not let them get anything going in the paint. Terre Haute North never really let it get out of hand, but were never really in it after the Ben Davis run early in the second. Ben Davis took the game 67-49.
Leading scorers: Ben Davis: Datrion Harper 14, Aaron Henry 14. Terre Haute North: Jalen Owens 12, Braelynn Compton 12.
Leading rebounders: Ben Davis: Aaron Henry 9. Terre Haute North: Jalen Owens 5, Grant Denney 5, Denny Zigler 5.
MVP: Aaron Henry (Ben Davis)
Davis was all over the court in this one. He made his living in the paint but also took some shots from the midrange as well. He was as active as I have ever seen him and he added three assists to his 14 point, nine rebound performance.
Best offensive performance: Richard Suggs (Terre Haute North)
For being an undersized forward Suggs got to the basket easily. He rebounded the ball well and converted those into a few points. He had five assists as well to go along with his 11 points. He was a bright spot on the Terre Haute team.
Best defensive performance: Datrion Harper (Ben Davis)
Harper is a really quick guard and he made it tough on the Terre Haute North guards all day long. He had three steals and forced turnover after turnover. He knew where the passes were going to go and was flying to the passing lane all day long.
Play of the Game: Josh Brewer to Trevaughn Bush
Brewer stole the ball and started down the court. It was a 3-on-1 and he finished with a behind the back pass to Bush for the easy lay-in. This made it 23-11 midway through the second quarter and forced a THN timeout
Best under-the-radar performance: Braelynn Compton (Terre Haute North)
Compton got going early and then kind of took a back seat. He had 12 points all in the first half and then kind of fell off. He added in three rebounds and two assists but he needed to be more assertive with the ball because he was a matchup problem.
Best guy off the bench: Trevaughn Bush (Ben Davis)
Bush came off the bench to score 10 points and grab six rebounds. He was a big body that Ben Davis really needed in this game. He had a few assists and looked aggressive on the offensive end as well.
Best Shooter: Jalen Owens (Terre Haute North)
Owens knocked down four three-pointers and kept his team in it before he got hurt early in the final quarter. He has a nice looking shot and can get hot at times when he’s feeling it. Did not do much driving but looked to shoot it from deep mainly.
Best underclassman: Cayman Hayes (Terre Haute North)
The starting sophomore point guard was pretty decent in the game with his leadership and handling. Scored a few points and crashed the boards decently. Just mainly played point and did not make a significant dent in the game, just played solid.
Best rebounder: Grant Denney (Terre Haute North)
Denney came off the bench and made a serious impact on the boards. It seemed like every rebound he got when he was in during limited playing time. He brought down five rebounds which was good for his playing time.
Best takeaway: Terre Haute North can have stretches where they are playing really well but they will have to depend on their three-point shot a lot and without height they will struggle when it is not. Ben Davis is a solid team when they play together they have a few good scorers and when they come together they will be really dangerous.
