Lakewood Park came out ready to play and jumped on Angola with two early three’s that got the crowd involved on their Silent Night Game. Lakewood Park took a 16-13 lead into the second quarter and rode that small lead into the half. Senior Keegan Fetters was nothing short of spectacular all night for Lakewood Park and lead them to a 31-24 lead at the half behind his 15 points.
Angola came out of the half and completely shut down any offensive flow that Lakewood had. Angola won the 3rd quarter 16-4 to take a 40-35 lead into the final quarter. Fetters and Honer went back and forth all night finishing with 32 points and 24 points respectively. Both of them carried their teams until the final buzzer. Angola pulled the win out, 58-55 in a tough fought battle.
MVP: Keegan Fetters (Lakewood Park Christian)
Although Lakewood didn’t come out with the win, Keegan Fetters was without a question that MVP of the game. He finished with 32 points (11-16 2FG and 10-10 FT), 12 rebounds (9 defensive and 3 offensive), 4 assists, 4 steals, and 2 blocks. Fetters had his fingerprints all over the game on both ends of the floor. Hard to put up this kind of stat line in a loss but Lakewood will get this from him just about every night. He is the most influential player on the court each and every game and will need to perform at a high level like this for the remainder of the season for Lakewood to be successful.
Best Offensive Performance: Keegan Fetters (Lakewood Park Christian)
Hard not to give the high point man the best offensive performance of the night but Fetters scored 32 points on 16 FG attempts. That is a level of production that any coach will take at any level. He shot 69% from the field and was 10-10 from the FT line. Not only did he continue to take great shots, he was efficient when he did shoot. Fetters was Mr. Everything for Lakewood tonight on the offensive end scoring/assisting on 76% of their total offense.
Best Defensive Performance: Quinten Lozano (Lakewood Park Christian)
Lozano was one of the hardest workers on both ends of the floor and really played well down low for Lakewood Park all night. He finished with a game high 4 steals, 1 block, and 7 defensive rebounds. Lozano used his athleticism and length to challenge shots around the rim and pull down some tough rebounds in traffic. He also pitched in 7 points and 2 assists on the offensive end of the floor.
Best Under-The-Radar Performance: Jake Honer (Angola)
Jake Honer did it all tonight and scored at each level. He and Fetters battled possession after possession to keep the game close. Honer finished with 30 points (7-10 2FG, 2-3 3FG, and 10-12 FT), 3 rebounds (2 defensive and 1 offensive), 3 assists, and 1 steal. He was the main focus of Angola’s offense and continued to get the job done when his number was called. He finished through contact around the rim and stretched the floor out early on with a few deep balls.
Best Player Off-The-Bench: Carter Gonzalez (Lakewood Park Christian)
Carter Gonzalez came off the bench for Lakewood Park and gave them energy and production. He was great on the defensive end of the floor, keeping his man away from the basket and being in the right spot on help-side defense. He finished the game with 6 points (2-3 3FG), 3 defensive rebounds, 1 assist, 1 steal, and 2 deflections. Although he didn’t produce at the level of his teammate Fetters, Gonzalez filled his role off the bench and did what he could to help his team win.
Best Shooter: Braxton Meek (Angola)
Braxton Meek is a catch-and-shoot only type of guy but he has a quick release with a smooth looking stroke. Meek only got of 4 three’s in the contest but did finished with 9 points (3-4 3FG). He was face-guarded from the tip and Lakewood executed their scouting report well in terms of keeping Meek closely guarded. When Meek gets a glimpse of space and his feet set, he will burry that shot. He will be a nice complement to Honer this season as he is more of a slasher.
Best Intangibles: Sam Bradley (Angola)
Sam Bradley confidently operated the Angola offense and handled the press from Lakewood Park. He finished the game with a game high 6 assists (2 turnovers) and added 1 point from the line, 2 rebounds, and a steal. Bradley was in control of the ball when it was in his hands and had control of the team during clutch time. He is the vocal leader for the Hornets and demanded the best out of his teammates, holding them accountable for their mistakes. He was the first to the floor on a crucial 50-50 ball late in the game that helped seal the win for the Hornets.
Best Rebounder: Keegan Fetters (Lakewood Park Christian)
As if Fetters hadn’t already been all over the stat sheet and scoreboard, he finished the game with a game high 12 rebounds (9 defensive and 3 offensive). His ability to attack the glass with athleticism and length allowed him to pull down some rebounds that seemed impossible. He has good hands (he is a PG) and great length. If Keegan can continue to help rebound with this kind of production, Lakewood will be able to limit teams to one shot and run the break because he is their primary ball handler.
Best Underclassmen: Isaac Farnsworth (Lakewood Park Christian)
Isaac Farnsworth came out ready to play. He scored the first 6 points for Lakewood with back to back threes. Unfortunately, he dealt with foul trouble all night and didn’t get into the flow of the game much after. He finished the game with 6 points (2-4 3FG), 3 rebounds (1 defensive and 2 offensive), and a steal. The freshman was impressive with his tenacity on the defensive end of the floor and took pride in getting stops. He will be a player to keep an eye on coming out of Lakewood Park in the next few years.
Biggest Takeaway: Fetters Does It All, Angola Takes Great Shots
Keegan Fetters does it all for Lakewood Park Christian. He is their primary ball handler, leading scorer, leading rebounder, and leading assist man. If he can continue to produce at his high of a level, he will continue to have more college programs knocking on his door. The unsigned senior is still testing the waters at each level (DIII-DI). Lakewood Park started the season strong posting a 5-0 record but have since dropped their last two. They will be a tough team in Class A if they can get consistent production from their starting core and a few off the bench. Angola is going to be a tough team to beat night in and night out due to their style of play and their willingness to work for the best shot every possession.
