The 22nd annual Hy-Vee Shootout was originally slated to feature some of the Kansas City area’s premier teams and players, but after a winter snow storm, only three games on Friday are in the books as Saturday’s games were cancelled. Here we take a look at some of the players that raised their profile over the course of Friday’s events.
Teams
Bishop Miege (Kan.), Blue Springs (Mo.), Blue Springs South (Mo.), Hogan Prep (Mo.), St. Thomas Aquinas (Kan.), Sumner (Kan.).
Francesco Badocchi, 6’7, 2017, Bishop Miege
An athletic forward, Badocchi is a superb athlete and a highly skilled 4 man. He has good timing and a good feel for blocking shots and the defensive end, and at the offensive end he plays above the rim, shows a nice feel for playing in the high post or the low post and is a terrific passer.
Jack Boedeker, 6’9, 2017, St. Thomas Aquinas
There just aren’t many 6’9, 240-pound big men in the high school game that can actually play. Boedeker is strong, agile and has a lot of potential. He has a nice feel for the game, playing in the low post, the high post and does a great job of securing the basketball, keeping it high and finding the open man. He’s a certain D2 prospect and could play his way into some D1 interest over the course of the season.
Josh Earley, 6’7, 2019, Bishop Miege
Extremely talented young big man, Early didn’t play much, just eight minutes, but showed his athleticism in brief moments on the court. He has a big frame and solid skill set and will be a force in Kansas basketball in the years to come.
Ben Hagenkord, 6’1, SG, 2017, St. Thomas Aquinas
Super competitive young man, Hagenkord can really shoot it, but does more than just that. Is good at attacking the defense and can get to the bucket. His bread and butter is his outside shot, but he’s a good all-around player.
RJ Lawrence, 5’11, SG, 2018, Blue Springs
Lawrence can really shoot it and is a guy that can get on a tear from deep. Is good off the bounce, either setting up a long distance jumper or beating his guy to the rim where he is an athletic finisher. Has a competitive fire in his game as well.
Caden Mauck, 6’6, 2017, Blue Springs
An under-the-radar big, Mauck has size and some skill, both on the perimeter and in the paint. He should be on the radar’s of NAIA level schools. Is a versatile player, especially at the offensive end. Even showcased a pull-up jumper off the bounce. Could develop into a stretch 4 type.
Landry Weber, 5’10, PG, 2017, Bishop Miege
Kid doesn’t get a lot of attention because of all the talent at Miege, but he is a consummate floor general. Took just one shot in the contest against Blue Springs, but it didn’t matter. He was the player the Bishop Miege bigs often looked for after securing a defensive rebound to start the break, which says a lot.
