And in doing so, the 6-foot-3 prospect — Washington’s 12th-ranked 2017 — says his recruitment should see a spike.
Right now Stephens is offer-less, but has been hearing from Division I programs and a couple JuCos are starting to get in the mix as well.
“This summer I was getting contacted by a lot of coaches during AAU, like Portland State, Montana State, Navy, Army, Oakland. They were all in contact, but none of them offered. And I have a couple JuCos that have been in contact with me too,” said Stephens.
“I’m just hoping to have a good season, and see what I can get after the season.”
His Eagles are off to another hot start this season, and Stephens says he’s seen come college coaches at the early games.
“I’m going to keep all my options open because you never know. I hope that I keep performing well, because I’ve had a couple coaches in the gym watching me play,” he said. “And I know at the state tournament we have a lot of D1 coaches that come and watch.”
A scoring guard with a penchant for finding open teammates, Stephens defined his playing style to PHWA.
“I’m really good at getting to the basket and I’m hard to stay in front of, and I’m hard to guard. I have a nice midrange jump-shot, I’m a good leader, and I’m a really, really good passer,” said Stephens.
“I just need to work on my consistency, and just bringing it every night out.”
Now in his third year starting with Federal Way, Stephens has some lofty personal and team goals for his final season.
“I’m trying to win Player of the Year for Washington, and I just want to win another state championship and be MVP of the tournament too,” he said.
“This year I have a big role with the team, and I’ll need to be a leader to the younger guys and stuff like that. And I’ll have to take the bulk of the scoring. So basically just score and lead the team.”
