Koby Butler is probably a name that most high school fans have not heard of in the state of Utah. People need to start because Butler has been dominating 2A basketball the past few years for Emery High School. He averaged 19 points and 11 rebounds per game as a junior and was practically unstoppable. The 6’5 post has wasted little time this season as he is averaging 20.5 points and 10 rebound through the first two games. It will be interesting to see if Butler can lead Emery to a 2A state championship in his last ride as a high school player.
When I asked Butler on his team’s outlook for the season he has this to say, “I’m very confident in the team we have this year. We have five seniors and this group has been playing together since we were in 4th grade. We expect to beat every team we play and compete for a 2A state championship.”
Butler has this to say about his strengths as a player, “I have very good hands for a big man which helps me catch passes coming to me in the paint. I also feel like I have very good post moves and i’m able to score in multiple ways in the post. I have the ability to step out and shoot the three which helps my guards penetrate easier.” Butler also talked about his weaknesses, “I need to work on my ball handling. This would allow me to take my defenders off the dribble. I also need to work on my quickness so I can guard the smaller players. If I want to play at the college level this something I need to do.”
Butler is planning on serving a LDS mission following graduation. Once he returns, Butler would like to continue his basketball career at the college level. Butler is undersized but with the amount of skills he has and how hard he plays, I project Butler as a mid-level junior college and NAIA prospect.
