The 6’3 guard has done a lot of work in the last year to become a better on-ball guard and against Mt. Vernon-Fortville, you got to see how good he can be against one of the best guards in the state.
“I thought we came out a little slow,” Hemenway said of the game. “A 6:45 AM leave, you kind of have to get up and get with it. I feel like after the first quarter we started getting with it and playing our defense.”
He started off a bit slow, but as the game moved into the second half you saw him start to take over for a stretch and show off his arsenal.
“It was just getting going, getting my legs under like I said and getting my agility up and making sure I can get my legs into my shot and knocking them down.”
Alex scored 19 points and grabbed 6 rebounds on 6/13 shooting from the field including 3/4 from deep. For the most part, he did this against Michael Ertel, a Indiana Junior All-Star last year and one of the better players in the state heading to Louisiana-Monroe for college.
“It’s humbling,” Hemenway said of his matchup with Ertel. “He’s a great player, everything he does. He shoots the ball well, handles it well and plays with his eyes up. Any time I can get to go against a great player like that see how i handle myself.”
In the offseason, Hemenway has been working on his guard play and prepping for the position. Strength training and ball handling are the areas of his focus.
“Getting stronger, getting in the weight room any time i can and get my body right and keeping my basketball skills in tune because I know I can’t just get in the gym and just lift, I got to do all the other stuff.”
“Ball handling,” Alex said of his skill work this offseason. “This year I am the point guard. I got to know all the plays, handle the ball, I’m the voice out there. I got to bring that intensity.”
Alex said he likes his chances at becoming a point guard for the next level and right now he is getting his chance.
“I like it. I like my chances at it. I like handling the ball, getting us in our offense and doing everything to make us be successful.”
Today, Hemenway already has a pair of offers in hand from Valparaiso and Evansville with schools like Belmont, Xavier, Indiana, and Marquette showing some new interest. He recently got to take a visit to Belmont in Nashville, Tennessee.
“Belmont is a great school,” Alex said of his trip to the OVC program. “I love their coaching staff. They are a great school, i love it there.”
The first school to offer the 6’3 guard was Evansville. The local program only a short drive from his home is on his radar and an option down the road. He knows the program, the arena, and is open to the idea of playing local.
“It’s a great school. It’s great playing in the Ford Center. It’s a great place and a great atmosphere. Oh definitely, anytime you get to stay home and play at a DI school go to the places they go, it is definitely a great school to go to.”
