A close game throughout, Hargrave was able to hang on at the end with some clutch free throw shooting from senior point guard David Garey to win 74-68. Benedictine will meet Walsingham Academy in the consolation game at 3:45, while Hargrave will play Trinity in the championship at 7:30. Here’s some takeaways from the game.
MVP: DJ Myers | Hargrave ’18
The 6’6” wing did a little bit of everything for Hargrave, but most importantly he came up with big shots when they needed him to. A versatile wing that’s a walking mismatch, Myers finished with 25 points on 9-for-13 shooting from the field, and he chipped in with five steals and four rebounds as well.
Play of the Game | Tre King | Hargrave ’18
In the third quarter with Benedictine on a run, a big-to-big pass led to one of the top plays of the evening. Big man EJ Williams shoveled a pass out of a double team to King, who effortlessly took off and finished ferociously at the rim with two hands. It not only showed his vertical leaping ability, but also how quickly he gets off the floor.
Best Offensive Performance | DJ Myers | Hargrave ’18
We mentioned the 25 points earlier, but it was the way that Myers did it that was impressive. He scored the basketball from all three levels, moved well off the basketball and was able to create shots in isolation situations. Most impressive was his 4-for-7 shooting from deep, which opened up the game for the rest of his teammates.
Best Defensive Performance | EJ Williams | Hargrave ’18
The stats may not show it, but the massive Williams clogged the paint and continually contested shots without fouling. Staying straight up and down, he allowed Benedictine players to create contact and disrupt their shots with the official not being able to call a foul because he has a right to that spot on the floor. He finished with 6 points, 5 rebounds and 2 blocks.
Best Guy off the Bench | Malik Morgan | Hargrave ’17
Morgan did everything that you ask of a player off the bench, and he was a big boost for Hargrave in their win. He played somewhat of a utility role, fitting in where he did, but he finished with 9 points (3-for-4 FG), four rebounds and two steals. With a talented starting front line that’s prone to foul trouble, if Morgan can continue to produce off the bench it will be big for Hargrave.
Best Intangibles | David Garey | Hargrave ‘17
Garey made plays throughout the game, but it was his clutch free throw shooting that sealed the game for Hargrave down the stretch. In the last three minutes, he was 6-for-7 from the free throw line, and he also set the tone defensively for Hargrave throughout the game.
Best Under the Radar Performer | John Salley | Benedictine ’18
Salley fell somewhat off the radar since last year, but let me tell you he’s come back ready to play this season! He didn’t start for Benedictine, but he was arguably the most efficient player in the entire game. The 6’11” available Salley finished with 14 points, 6 rebounds and three blocks in 17 minutes of play, and was 6-for-7 from the field and 2-for-2 from the line.
Best Underclassman | Henry Coleman | Benedictine ’20
Coleman is still working his way into the Benedictine rotation, but in the time he’s had he’s looked very good. A 6’6” combo forward, he plays with a ton of energy and a high motor, which allows him to be effective against older and more skilled players. With his mix of size, athleticism and skill set at his age he’ll likely pan out to be one heck of a player.
Best Rebounder | Dimitri Georgiadis | Benedictine ’18
Georgiadis wasn’t great from the field, but he still gave everything he had on the glass. He finished the game with 10 rebounds, 6 of which were offensive, and he kept plays alive for his team and battled with the big front line that Hargrave put out there.
Best “Step Up” Performer | Seneca Louis | Benedictine ’18
Louis wasn’t bad in the first half, but he almost single handedly brought Benedictine back by making big shots throughout the fourth quarter. After scoring just four points on two shots in the first half, Louis finished with 21 points on 6-for-13 shooting, 2-for-2 from deep (both huge within the last two minutes), and 7-for-10 from the line. He also pitched in with five rebounds, five assists and two steals.
