Alec Burton, the standout junior for Danville punched in 24 points and 12 rebounds. Cam Chadd led the way for Southmont with 24 points of his own to go along with 6 rebounds.
MVP: Alec Burton (Danville)
Alec was really solid in this game, showing off his face-up game and sheer strength in the post to the point where Southmont didn’t have an answer at all. He was 9/14 from the field, 8/11 from inside the arc. His jump shot wasn’t great, going 1/4 on pure jumpers but the reality is he’s such a load in the post that you can’t slow him down. His 12 rebounds came split even between offensive and defensive. It was a great game for him and is easy to see how Danville is undefeated right now.
Best Offensive Performance: Cam Chadd (Danville)
Cam was rough through a lot of the game as Danville’s length gave their entire team issues, especially him because he was just physically in possession of the ball more than everyone else. Even so, he still found a way to drop 24 points on 6/14 shooting and was pretty good from deep range. He had 4/9 of his three-pointers fall in. The turnovers killed but as the main guy on a team with not much depth, he’s bound to fall into games like this as he has to overplay it sometimes.
Best Defensive Performance: Austin Cowart (Danville)
The guy on the defensive end that seemed to be in the middle of everything was Cowart. The 6’2 junior guard was really tough tonight and got a ton of deflections and was a part of the perimeter double and triple teams Danville was throwing out there. He scored most of his points off of those Southmont turnovers and finished with 20 on the day. He was 8/12 from the field. Cowart is only a 2018 prospect and could get some looks as a two-way player.
Best Under-The-Radar Performance: Kaleb Swick (Southmont)
Swick started off really slow and was put into a lot of perimeter sets, taken away from the rim to try and expose some weakness against Burton down low. However, once they started to let him float deeper and deeper into the post, he really started to perform well. He finished with 14 points on 6/11 shooting with 10 of his points coming in the paint. He showed good touch on the turnaround hook and some finesse finishing faced up against Burton. He’s not tall enough for the position but he’s beginning to become a lot more of a scoring threat and expanding his arsenal.
Best Underclassmen: Sam Comer (Danville)
There are two freshman that play solid minutes for Danville but Comer actually starts for them and it is easy to see why. He’s 6’4 and long, really long and fits right into what Danville likes to do. He’s a two-guard or wing with good touch beyond the arc. He scored 6 points and had 4 rebounds in the game. He’s a thin kid right now but the height and length along with his shooting really make him an intriguing player to watch in the 2020 class.
