Tip-off was at 6 a.m. as both teams participated in the 48-hour weekend basketball marathon. In the end, the size and experience of Ellington was too much for a young Jamestown squad as the Whippets came away with a 65-35 victory.
Team Scouting:
Ellington: The Whippets are a veteran team with high aspirations in Class 2 this season after winning back-to-back district championships. The senior duo of 6’6″ Wesley Sharp and 6’4″ Marshon Morrisey is one of the top tandems in the state. They dominated the game with a combined 45 points.
Jamestown: They are young with a junior-dominated lineup, so Jamestown is expecting some big things in the next couple of years. Junior Trenton Barbour is a nice 6’5″ talent, but he was saddled with foul trouble for much of the game.
Now, for the 10 Best:
MVP: Marshon Morrisey (Ellington) – The beefy 6’4″ post had his way with smaller Jamestown defenders all morning as he scored a game-high 23 points. Not only is Morrisey big, but he has good footwork and a nice touch around the basket. Although he spent his share of time on the bench with foul trouble, he manage to have plenty of buckets and rebounds for breakfast.
Best Offensive Player: Wesley Sharp (Ellington) – The 6’6″ Sharp finished with 22 points, including 17 in the second half when he came alive with many fantastic plays. He displayed the shooting touch from 3-point range, scored on the high post and produced a couple of highlight-reel slam dunks in transition.
Best Shooter: Austin Flippin (Jamestown): The 6’1″ junior guard scored a team-high 11 points for Jamestown, with most of them coming from 3-point range. He was able to knock down three triples over the top of Ellington’s 2-3 zone defense.
Top Young Prospest: Clark Rohrbach (Jamestown):A 6’1″ 2020 wing player who is getting his feet wet in varsity competition. A southpaw with good length and feel for the game. He scored five points. He did a nice job of driving to the basket and drawing contact inside.
Unsung Player: Jacob Richards (Ellington) – The 6’1″ senior forward scored a quiet 12 points for the Whippets as he did a nice job of playing off Sharp and Morrisey. He converted all of his layups inside off some nice passes.
Best Passer: Wesley Shapp (Ellington): He delivered several nice dimes to teammates when he wasn’t getting buckets.
Key Moment of Game: The second half began with Ellington leading 22-14 and Jamestown still in the game. But, in the third quarter, the Whippets exploded for 23 points to blow the game open. What hurt Jamestown was losing the 6’5″ Barbour, their leading scorer, who picked up his fourth foul early in the quarter and having to sit down.
Play of the Game: Late in the third quarter, Sharp darted into the passing lane and stole an entry pass and dribbled the length of the court and delivered an emphatic slam dunk that was very impressive. He stretched out pretty good for that one.
